"Cobalt" = carbon?

Hi guys, I'm interested in making some sloyd style carving knives. While looking for suitable steel I came across a recommendation for using sawzall blades.

As I was checking the local tractor stores supply I came across several brands. The one I bought was labeled "high carbon bi-metal", but another brand was sold as "high cobalt bi-metal" and was roughly twice the price.

My question is, what is high cobalt? Would it make for a suitable blade steel? Is it better than my hc blade?

Anything else you want to throw in is very much welcome. I don't really know what I'm doing (can you tell? lol) so any advice on blade selection or heat treating or anything else is much appreciated.

The way I understand it is that a bi metal blade is 2 different types of steel. A hard cutting tooth, cobalt or such on a spring tempered piece of steel. Once the tooth is ground off all you have is the spring tempered piece of steel.
It can cut but will not produce much of a knife.
The way you will find out is to try one.
Experience is a Good teacher.
My recommendation is to get a piece of "Known" steel and to not guess.

I believe cobalt blades are ones with cobalt steel as a circle of steel, with regular steel or carbide cutting teeth around the edges. And the Cobalt steel(at least ones with more than a percent or two) probably wouldn't be suitable to make a knife, and the heat treatment wouldn't be possible with most home setups. So, don't use the cobalt blade. I recommend just buying some 1084 online.
 
Cobalt is not carbon. They are both separate elements of the periodic table, and have different properties. I use cobalt drills when drilling stainless, they hold up much better than HSS for that.

Different elements, different properties. Hi carbon is going to be make a blade that is relatively easy to sharpen, with good edge retention. I don't know exactly what a high-cobalt blade will do, but I do know if you made a proper twist drill out of it, it would be good for drilling stainless.

Instead of buying sawzall blades at tractor supply warehouses for knifemaking, you might be better served through Amazon, under industrial supply, or the industry partner on here, although I only have experience buying from Amazon, with a proper knifemaking steel. That is what I did. Ordered some O-1 to the thickness and dimensions I wanted, and it came to me, in a few days, minus any taxes or compromises in product quality.

I have 2 knives made from sawzall blades. One is very sharp and holds an edge very well. The other didn't harden, and won't hold an edge. The one that didn't harden was a bimetal blade. The one that turned out well was from a non carbide tipped wood blade.

Cobalt is a metal which is alloyed into high speed steel cutting tools to help hold an edge better at the high heat in machining
They use it a lot as a sales catch word.

Lowes or somebody spells it wrong then trademarked it and sells all their tools under that brand name just to confuse folks.

Use sawsall blades in your sawsall saw, buy new steel to make a knife with.
It's cheaper than sawblades and you know what you've got.

The $50 knife Shop
This book has a great title, but is NOT gospel. It confused me for a long time.
Forging is NOT necessary; you can file and grind to create a knife (stock removal)

Forget the Goop Quench BS, Even back when they used whale oil, it was still liquid oil.
Use a commercial quench oil & match oil speed to the steel type;
Grocery store canola oil works for some steels like 1084.

Junkyard steel requires skill and experience to identify and heat treat it properly.
Forget Lawnmower blades and railroad spike, start with a new known steel.
Good heat treating needs accurate temperature control and full quench.
You can buy proper steel like 1084FG from Aldo very cheaply, and quench in Canola.

Cable damascus is an advanced project has no place in a beginner’s book.

The grinders are the best thing about this book, but 2x72” belt grinders free plans are now on the web.

Steel
The “welding steel” at Home Depot / Lowes… is useless for knives.
Forget about lawnmower blades ,files and other unknown junkyard steels.
For all the work involved, it is very cheap to buy and use a known good steel.

If you send out for heat treating, you can use
Oil quenched O1, 1095, 1084
Or air quenched A2, CM154, ATS34, CPM154, 440C, plus many others.

For heat treating yourself with minimal equipment, find some Eutectoid steel and quench in Canola oil.

Grocery store canola oil works well enough for your first knife-if you use the right steel like 1084

Brine and water are cheap, and technically correct for "water hardening" steels W1 and 1095 but a fast oil like Parks 50 or Houghton Houghto Quench K are less likely to give you broken blades
If you use water or brine, expect to hear a "tink" and have a cracked or broken blade

Glue – Epoxy
Use a new package of slow setting 30 min to 1 hour, high strength epoxy to attach blades to handles and seal out moisture.
Slow epoxy is stronger and gives you time to work with it.
Surface Prep is vital, drill tang holes/ grind a hollow, roughen the surfaces with abrasive or blasting is best.
Ensure the surface is clean and no oil including fingerprints.
Use Acetone & Alcohol, or Blasting.
Don't' over clamp to avoid a “glue starved joint” when all the adhesive is squeezed out.

Grinders
In my opinion, variable speed and a small wheel attachment are essential on a good grinder.
You can almost always improve tracking with more belt tension. It needs to be way tighter than you first think.

VFD Variable Speed made simple

Step pulleys are not as cheap as you may think
Maska cast steel pulleys are good and well balanced $75 EACH here plus shaft, bearings, belt

It all adds up to about 1/2 the price of a KBAC-27D

I like direct drive with no belts using a VFD and 3 phase motor for about $200 over the price of the step pulleys with much finer control.

Yes you can get cheaper NEMA 1 VFD’s and build your own enclosure

RPM is up to you many are happy with a 1700 RPM running at double speed.
Make sure it has a footed base for the KMG and NWG, or a C flange face mount for Bader, Bee, Wilton and GIB styles.
I get them on ebay, even with paying $80 for shipping to Canada I save $$$ on a used motor.

The 1.5 HP combination is the most common, as reported by Rob Frink

There are cheaper VFD units like the TECO, but the only VFD I have found that will run a 1.5 HP motor on a 110v 15 amp input is the KBAC27D

I like the fact that I can buy it from a local distributor in Canada.

Great advice guys! I tried my hand (very briefly) at stock removal years ago. I made the mistake of buying a bunch of thick 1095 and never saw good results. Messed with file knives and a few other things. I have a lot of the books that are popular for makers, and have read them but since I lost my shop space I kind of put the whole thing to the side.

This time I'm going to start very slowly and simply. I just want to make some carvers as carving is my main hobby (between the two).

I stopped by my storage place tonight (before I read your replies) and grabbed a small belt grinder, my one brick forge and some torches. Since I already have the knife blade cut out and partly ground I'm going to try a quick ht and oven temper.

There are so many facets to this website. I love that I can be talking about my latest Benchmade, then talk to my carving buddies about different wood types, then get some advice on grinding my own knife all in one place. :thumbup:

Thanks guys. I think I'll probably grab some of that 1084 in the links. I'd like to try some high end pm stainless too to send out for ht. But that's for later! :)
