Cold Remedies

Developed my yearly cough in Sept. Allergies, I think. It decided to progress to congestion, then into the lungs, then turns all green.......off to the dr for antibiotics. Clears up.....had to rake leaves.....get it all back again. Tried all the home remedies, chicken soup, tea until I should have just lived in the bathroom, vitamins, ETC. It's worse. Need surgery so dr needs to get lungs and cough completely healed up. They put me on mega dose of antibiotics and prednisone (my nasal passages and ears are severely swollen:rolleyes: ) and also a steriod inhaler......it's not working......I'm thinking a vacation in Hawaii.......clear out all the allergens......or maybe Antartica would be better......they have penguins.

There's zinc and lots of C in my vitamins plus echinechia. I wonder if I could be allergic to something in the vitamins that is actually harrassing the situation..... :grumpy:

If I catch it early, it's a few days of tea, scotch, sleep, and echinacea.

If it is still fighting then a visit to the acupuncturist usually does the job, along with the above remedies. Also use a neti pot with a drop of tea tree oil in it to clean out the sinuses.

If it really takes a hold then I'll make a trip into chinatown and get some herbs to brew up into a tea. Being made mostly of dead bugs and dried herbs, it tastes about the same, so I try and not get to this point. But it does work like a charm, a really disgusting, hold your nose shut and suck it down kind of charm.

As Mike and Ken have said, if you catch a cold early, you can shut it down.
When symptoms first start, take extra Vitamin C, drink lots of water, get as much rest as you can, and take antihistamines. Antihistamines actually only work for 3 days, after which they have a reverse effect, but if you hit it quickly, a 3 day course may be enough.

I had a history most of my life of catching a lingering cold-related something or other every year, that often would develop into asthmatic bronchitis. This year, I got sick around the beginning of December. I managed to never develop the chest symptoms (don't think I have since Nov 98-Jan, 1999), but I did have a sore throat for about 3 weeks.

Some of the time it was pretty bad. Zinc gave some relief, and I drank a lot of hot teas, usually with a small bit of alcohol (I finally bought a small bottle of grain alcohol so I wouldn't be wasting good whiskey), lime juice, and honey. I mixed that up sometimes with hot chicken bullion, ginger, lime juice, and hot sauce. I also gargled warm salt water, sometimes.

One of the last days of class, my throat hurt so badly I gargled with warm salt water with about 1/3 grain alcohol! My throat was so sore, the gargle barely fased the pain. I also ate my roomate's Ritter Sport Chocolate Marzipan bar.

Anyway, whatever else you do, drink lots of water, and get rest. Spicey foods have often helped me- a good friend makes a soup out of an entire bottle of Tabasco. She claims it simulates a fever in the body, and kills off the virus. I don't know if I believe her explanation, but I do believe it might work.

Kinda like prayer. ;)

A very hot bath, into bed with all the blankets on top, the coon hound under the covers, a cup of hot water with lemon and rum. A lot of vitamin C, echinacea, and zinc lozenges, but if the symptoms are really bad, a dose of Ny-Quill, makes sleep possible, if groggy. I do like the weird dreams, it gives me though:D
I always believe your body tells you what you need to eat. Sometimes, for me, it's tuna salad sandwiches, sometimes it's Lipton's chicken soup. I always keep the ingredients for those in the pantry, just in case. Fresh fruit, if possible.
