Cold Steel's AUS-8A claim...

Cold Steel also told the world that companies that made knives from 420 were ripping them off and then they started making knives out of 420. Take anything that Cold Steel states with a grain of salt.

Keith,

yeah, that's about what i was thinking. that's why i used "claim" in the title. i mean, their dvd (which i watched again last night, it's a disease) makes so many claims, it's crazy. i really think they could bring their own reputation up if they would just say less about their products, not more.

they keep referring to their AUS-8 as if it were some sort of ultimate-steel or something.

i've got one of their Voyager XL's on its way to me, and from what i've read, it's gonna be a pretty nice knife for the price. then i read about some of their other stuff that people say is trash. that's too bad.

Yep, I saw it, just wanted to clarify (not that any was needed). I think you'll have fun with the XL Voyager. But, like I said, their 420 stuff is....well, 420 stuff.

Ok I looked it up on a steel chart AUS-8 looks more similar to 440 A or B while 440C looks more similar to VG-10, with the exception of VG-10 having some Cobalt in it. I have blades in all of the above and with the exception of VG-10, 440C is my favorite to use (much cheaper than blades in higher end steels, and its easier to sharpen than most high-end steels). Also you guys are correct about the heat treatment, a good 440C knife can compete (but not always defeat :) ) with most SS on the market. I think Boker in particular does a good job with 440C and I've heard (but not used) Benchmade does also. Just use my simple rule to make users knife life simple: VG-10 (preferred but 440C or S30V are great too) for folders, 1095 or 0170-6C for fixed blades. :)

ok, here goes... the orginal post 440c vs aus8a, my .02 cents.
i have a Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter and a BM mini-grip (sheepfoot).
CS- aus8a
BM-440c
i find quite a bit of difference in the too. i wish they were from the same co. but not. BM's 440c (i find) is much better at edge ret. stain res. Both get razor sharp but the 440c holds out longer every time. aus8a stains not badly, but does.

something else, i took my BM 440c, Gerber 154cm, and (sears?) aus6a and stabbed holes in the bottoms of soup cans.
aus6a gave up after about 20-25 holes.
154cm, forget about it. after 20-25 holes leading blade edge was deformed. (rolled edge)
440c after 20-25 holes would still shave hair. after 70-75 holes (three cans) i could still get hair off arm but the effort to do so made me nervous.

all blades were sharpened same method and angle. (i am a one trick pony!)

Interesting. The Benchmade 440C being in the form of a Mod Sheepfoot blade may have had something to do with it winning out over the 154CM. Which Gerber 154CM blade were you comparing to the 440C Grip? I really like BM 154CM.

SpydieFan04, the 154cm i got has left me not wanting anymore. my 440c, i take more of it! i also like BM's N690, holds up nicely (anyone else like N690?)

just got some Bos' treated S30V,... time to stab more cans. :)

Ras, it was i mini-covert. i really like the knife, and i could have gotten a bad treat.

edit: blade shape does have a part in the steels preformance
edit:edit: (performance)
*getting my hooked on phonics tapes soon*

i bought a Benchmite for my pal Christmas before last (so he's had it around 1 year and a month), and he's used it extensively since then. he brought it to my house a few weeks back and said it had become dull. i checked the edge and he was right, it was a little dull -- not shaving sharp at all. i stropped it exactly 10 times, 5 strokes on each side of the blade, and it was back. shaving sharp again (and not pulling). i must say that in my eyes, this speaks highly of 154cm.

i myself recently obtained a 710 in 154cm that came with a pretty nice factory edge -- not the sharpest thing i've ever seen, but it has been cuttin' for a week now, and it's cruisin. should be some time before i need to freshen up the edge. ymmv, of course.

allyourblood, i think, IMHO, anything that BM does with steel could be one of the finest examples of that steel. i will agree with you and i should take back "not wanting anymore 154cm" i would not hesitate to buy 154cm from BM. *take this with a grain of salt for i'm new to the "quality" knife world*

* i should not hold 154cm responsible for all knife makers*

I think you'll like VG-10 better than 154CM/ATS34, S30V is arguably better than both but I'll stick to my VG-10:)
