Concealed Knife Laws (VA)

Okay I do not conceal any of these, my bowie, hawk or any fixed blade in VA . Now yes I do open carry them . If somehow I let on that I conceal carry these I'm sorry I don't , I have a CHP and that's for handguns only and I still usually open carry.

As for the hawk and concealed carry on it I'd just rather not find out what would happen and open carry it.....lol

Don't get hung up on just state code. Every city, town and county can enact their own. Be careful is all I am saying. Most of "us cops" really don't care about them. I didn't. I might have asked what you had or how much it was if I wanted to buy one.

I live in Alexandria, VA. The knife law states that a knife carried on your person and "hidden from common observation", is considered a violation of that law. I can understand that if you have a blade entirely in your pocket, i.e. no part at all can be seen with casual observation, that is considered concealed and thereby a violation of the law. But if I carry a blade the way many of us do: the knife is clipped to the inside of your pocket but the top part of the blade and the blade carry clip is easily observable, that is OK. Am I right on this? That term "hidden from common observation" is what's throwing me in a loop. Thanks for any advice.

I am in Central Va. and just retired from law enforcement. The general meaning we were taught is it cannot be "hidden from common observation". Be careful on folding knives. Each locality can set its own in munincipal code. Richmond has a limit on clasp(locking) folders of blade lengths. They cannot be over 3.25 inches.

SGT405 can you please offer your opinion on my posting (dated 3/31/2023) concerning the term "hidden from common observation"? Thanks

There was recently a change to Virginia’s law on concealed knife carry. Starting in the summer (can’t remember the exact date), autos can be legally carried concealed (last year they legalized them for possession, sale and open carry), but they added “stiletto” to the list of items that can’t be carried concealed. I’m assuming that means you can carry an auto concealed as long as the blade isn’t a stiletto shape.
