The short answer is NO. As a member of the armed forces you have cannot carry an automatic unless it is issued to you in order to perform your assigned duties, or unless you are specifically authorized to carry one of your own.

when you are ready to go to basic training I am sure that you will be given a list of things that you can bring, that you need to bring and that you are not to bring. My guess is that a knife of any kind will be on the "do NOT bring" list.

As I understand it, during basic, the army will issue you everything they want you to have including the words in your mouth and the thoughts in your head. When you get out of basic you will have a little, perhaps a lot more latitude depending on where you end up.

I'm sure there will be lots more advise coming for you, there are a lot of old soldiers here.

Well Scouter,

I may have spoken too soon! Not much of a response yet.

I will kick this back up to the top one time for you. We will see who is around today.

Whatever you do do NOT take a knife especially a auto to basic. It will be confiscated for ever and ever. Everything you own will be packed up and locked away where you can not get to it after a intense shakedown for illegal items.

After you graduate basic you might get away with a Delica or somthing on these lines while your in tech school depending on where and what your taking.

Once you get to your first duty station it's possible to get away with a auto if it's needed in your duty. However, you can not carry it when in civies or off duty and it's illegal to have them in the dorms.

All in all you would be better off getting somthing other than a auto.

when you go to your basic training, if you take a knife of ANY kind, you'll be lucky to see it again.
Once you go out of basic (and the requisite accompanying classes) you'll not be allowed to carry an automatic unless authorized...
and if you get popped with one, depending on the current tolerance of your posting, you may get a warning or go the whole route through the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice)

In '91 they even took our nail clippers :>
Leave your knives at home. I've been stationed all over the world and have carried my benchmade tanto auto and just recently the striker auto most everywhere I go. Let me stress that this isnt truely legal. The Army decided that any knife with a locking or fixed blade, or a blade over 4 inches is contraband and must stay in quaters or the armsroom if you live in the barracks (as I do) Automatics are contraband no matter how long the blade is. Of course all of this is just ridiculus as most every knife I own locks, to include my swiis army :> I keep all but my fixed blade knives in my room in a locked blasting cap ammo box in a locked wall locker. My chain of command are fully aware of this and it hasnt presented a problem ever. Once again I am still "breaking" the rules, however I have had 10 years of service 6 of which as an NCO, this doesnt make it right, however it lets me squeak by a little better than the PFC down the hall with 3 ART 15's. There are also post policies that should be reffered to when you get where you are going. Our barracks policy clearly states that knives over 5" are not allowed, which directly conflicts with Army policy :> go figure! I know of noone ever being hasseled about a locking blade or a knife over 4 inches (exluding most fixed blades) Best bet is to get a CCW for off post carry of auto knives and fixed blades and firearms. Know that you cannot carry any of these on Post/Federal Property concealed or unless transporting them to and from theyre place of use or repair. My experiences will not gurantee anything for you, good luck in basic then get smart with the local and military laws when you get to your duty station. BTW insist on being recycled if you cannot pass the PT test :> We are getting tired of retraining guys straight from Basic!! :> Good Luck

DO NOT!!!
I repeat...
DO NOT!!!
Bring any knife or firearm to basic training unless you are looking to get off on the wrong foot.
I remember the DI chewing out a recruit for bringing/packing his clothes into a trash bag. He could'nt understand why the recruit would fly several hundred miles, just to drop his trash on his doorstep!!! I can't even imagine what would have happened that first night if someone had declared that they were in possesion of a "weapon" when asked. Oh boy!!! The s**t would have hit the fan for sure.

You're recruiter (as well as your appropriate branch web site)can supply you with a list of all items that you will need to bring with you. If it's not on the list, you don't need it.
I know that it would seem normal to bring along your favorite knife to basic, but that's not how they're going to see it. Trust me!!!

Good Luck with Basic!!!

wait just a sec here...

If autos are contraband in active duty military, why is that one of only two groups of people (LE is the other) that dealers will sell autos to ?????

Without getting into details of the job. A Finance specialist has no need for an auto opener, where as Sappers or Infantrymen or other combat specialties may have a very good use for it. As are SPECOPS of all branches of service. The Army does in fact issue a small bright orange switchblade that looks an awful like a boyscout knife to some airborne units. In order for a "uniform" law regarding contraband, its much easier to say that something is ilegal for the masses and issue discrimintly to legit users..

Sorry I am getting in on this so late, but I think I might have some info to contribute (even though the OP is likely done with Basic/Boot). There is going to be A LOT of restrictions clambering to tell you what you're allowed to carry when it comes to knives. I have never read anything in the Army regulations that prescribe what you are permitted to own/carry. But post policy, company/battalion commander's policy, and what your platoon sergeant will let you get away with will all determine what you can carry ON DUTY. The moment you step off the federal reserve all of those protections/limitations effectually go away and state laws take over.

For anecdote: I carried a fixed blade in direct conflict with post policy in one place because my company and platoon sergeant didn't care and off post I was still legal by state law. In another place I carried an even larger fixed blade because post policy allowed it, company didn't care, but off post the state didn't allow for the carry of any fixed blades at all. Knowing all of this, it should be recognized that A LOT of posts and states that prohibit autos of all kinds. I think that, because of this, a lot of commanders and platoon sergeants don't want their guys carrying autos. Whether or not they believe them to be more dangerous, they don't want their subordinates arrested for carrying an illegal knife.

You'll hear this a lot, but as long as you use your head and are situationally aware, you'll be fine. Don't show up to a school or new unit carrying an OTF blade unless it it is written in black and white and published that they want you to carry one, get there and feel it out before you pull out your Benchmade auto. I sutured a guys hand on his FIRST day at one unite because the idiot showed up with an OTF knife and his buddy stabbed him with it. No joke. The guy never lived it down.
