counterfeit Ontario RAT 1 ?????

The best way to combat clones, is to purchase from reputable dealers. Never buy from the bay or the big river store.....not ever, no matter what!!!

i just hope people reed this! i just got this so called rat 1 in the mail box today, what a disappointment, would be a grate knife if it where not made in china and a copy cat of the real thing, sending this thing back, and will order from OKC.vary shortly, any one thinking of buying this camo version with all the true stampings on the blade, just don't do it!its a real good copy with all the proper markings on knife and box,but fit & finish are not there,i think the real give away,is its hardware is all silver and not the regular black color,so guys think twice and take care.

Avoid buying from ebay. I peruse ebay sometimes but never buy anything because I just can't tell which sellers are legit, unless it's a big national seller like the sports authority (which I can get the same deals direct from their website so why buy through ebay). As far as the "big river store", I've had great experiences from amazon, but try to buy from amazon itself and not from one of the private sellers on that site, unless you can verify the seller is legit. There are some good private sellers there. Everytime you buy junk and counterfeit, you're only encouraging more phonies. Therefore, always research your purchases thoroughly and buy from legitimate dealers only. If everyone stopped buying junk, the bs business would dry up quickly.

Something I noticed. All of the major retailers and legit knife sights that I have seen , as well as the official Ontario sight all show the rat 1 having black hardware. I'd say that silver hardware is a dead giveaway, at least for the current generation of knives. I'm not sure if older models had black or not.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread.

OKC, its time for some scale options. I'd like some red, blue or orange scales for my black bladed Rat 1, please!

.... and for the Rat-2 please. Love my Rat-2. I asked for all available colors for Christmas. Would love to see more scale/color options.

I've recently learned that the Rat-2 has been cloned in China as well. It looks similar to the authentic version, but does have noticeable differences.

The most disappointing aspect for me is that the scales are not interchangeable.

Hey guys, I know this is an old thread, but I bought a Ontario model 1, and I want to know IF it's fake, I got a good price on it, $40, though I have seen lower,so how can I know for SURE if it's a fake? The Ontario RAT's I see in this store are really nice, I mean, I am a 30+ year knife nut, and I bought it no questions, they are nice, solid "click" when it opens, just a nice knife- I have no experience with Ontario RAT's.

I bought a digital camo, an orange, and a blue scaled version off ebay (rat 1 is my favorite knife). Mine are all marked properly, but I got suspicious when I moved the pocket clip and the holes were only tapped at the original location... going to disassemble and compare. If I find any other obvious differences, I'll post them here.

Here's a clip of a post I made in another thread concerning the difference between a real Rat-2 and a clone.

Well, as I was researching something else, I just learned that there are Chinese made clones of both the Ontario Rat-1 and Rat-2.

I've heard of high-end, high-priced knives being cloned/copied, but a $25 knife? This actually explains allot to me and solves a mystery that's been driving me crazy for the last couple of days.

I recently purchased a couple Rat-2 knives, because they were pictured with scales that I've not seen advertised. I was initially led to believe that they were Rat-2 knives, with custom scales.

I knew something was up when I got the 1st one. Some of the things I noticed are as follows.

- Blade etching is raised and in a smaller font on the blade front and larger on the blade back, as compared to the authentic.
- Thumb stud is smaller.
- Not as much of a blade belly.
- Thicker blade stock.
- Longer pocket-clip.
- Thicker liners.
- Pillers are not "D" shape on the ends, to lock into the liners.
- Pocket-Clip, screws and the screws that hold the scales to the pillars are not black, just raw natural.
- Scales are claimed to be G10, but who really knows for sure.
- Size/Shape is slightly off compared to the authentic Rat-2, which disallows the scales from being interchangeable.

That last issue is what pisses me off the most. I was hoping to use these scales on my authentic Rat-2.

Haven't taken them apart yet but one obvious difference is the handle length (pink and brown are real)

Jim ping is also obviously different

Sorry to bump this older thread. It's almost a given not to buy certain things on Ebay, but it was also said in this thread to avoid Amazon as well. I know higher priced knives are iffy there, but what if it's sold by Amazon itself; rather than a 3rd party?

I recently picked up a Rat 2 there. First thing I noticed is that it's difficult to open. It's no where remotely close to the fast-opening you see on all the review videos. How are Rat 2's supposed to open? Fast or slow? And how do the copies open?

- Thicker liners.
- Pillers are not "D" shape on the ends, to lock into the liners.

I took it apart to see if anything was wrong with it. I'm thinking the liner is either too thick or way too strong, which holds the blade back. And putting it back together was a PITA since one of the pillers wouldn't even slip into the liner recess.

I started thinking maybe it was defective, so I ordered a 2nd one. It opens the same way. Is Amazon selling copies, or is this just the way Rat 2's are?

I have 8 or so rat 2's from various sources, including some ebay bought clones... all are smooth and fast. Some required a break in period or some pivot tweaking but, nothing as bad as what you're describing.

One think to note... the clones I bought all were smooth and fast out of the box, no break in or pivot adjust required. Maybe newer rat 2's have an issue?

I suppose it all comes down to what we consider "fast". At one of the major vendors, they have a video from The Last Boyscout who reviews the Rat2. Since it's included as advertisement, I'm guessing that's the way it's supposed to deploy.

Both knives I received are nowhere near that. The first one is a two-hand opener. The second one is a little better, but requires 2 steps to deploy. The only adjustment seems to be the pivot. I've adjusted it all the way until the screw was removed and it really hasn't helped.

I posted here because I was worried I bought a clone. But after reading your reply, clone or not, it seems these knives aren't deploying the way they're supposed to. But I do like everything else about the Rat2. It feels a lot better than my Gerber Air Ranger, which is the most comparable knife I have to the Rat2. Maybe I'll buy a clone to compare with.

Sounds like you maybe got some lemons... try a some reel oil and some couch time to open them a few hundred times.

Yeah, I'll play around with the 2nd one and give it some time. The speed doesn't concern me too too much, since the knife itself feels so good. Regardless of whether it's authentic or not, I guess it's a good reminder about Ebay/Amazon/etc. I have a Becker coming in tomorrow from Amazon, but I think I'll start buying from approved vendors now. Thanks for the replies, Yeuhs.
