For everyone that sees this, I highly encourage you to donate to your local movements and organizations that you trust. In the coming weeks and months, frontliners will run out of food, PPEs, and other essential items. Let’s do what we can to support our local health workforce.
 
I agree with Danger^ My wife is a level 2 neonatal Nurse in Cambridge Ma. and she is already limited to ONE MASK for a 12 hour shift! Her Workmate came in for her shift and reported to her that her mothers BF tested positive and that they had spent some time together. My wife made her call and report to the Head Nurse and she was promptly escorted to the ER where she was informed that the Hospital only had 6 test kits and that they would not use one on her so they sent her home to self Quarantine leaving my wife responsible for taking care of 6 premature newborns. The next few weeks will make or break the USA and the outcome will be determined on how WE respond to the warnings and guidelines being given to us by our local and Federal health officials. Our fathers and grandparents were ask to give risk their lives for their country and all they are asking us to do is to stand 6 feet away from each other, stay at home as much as possible, and to wash our hands frequently for at least 20 seconds. We can do this people! We need to think of others instead of ourselves for a couple of weeks in order so that we don't overwhelm the hospitals with needless cases. Just remember if ONE hospital worker tests Positive (if they even get officially tested) All the workers they had contact with on the job will be asked to self quarantine for two weeks! If you do some simple math you can see that the care system will be understaffed very quickly. On a positive note I have never seen more people exercising outside and enjoying the great outdoors than ever before. I have a great feeling the USA is going to kick Coronas ass but not before we take good beating so until then stay safe, keep a safe distance from others, wash your hands with regular soap often, and remember that how YOU act Can and Will affect others lives.
 
We all know covid-19 infections are going to increase. But the rate of increase is important as medical facilities will become overwhelmed very quickly with a huge surge of infected people. The key is to stay at home and isolate yourself as much as you can. Only turn to medical care when it becomes important to preserving your life.

Hunker down for the unknown. Shelter in place. Practice social distancing with people outside your household. Wear protection when venturing out among people for food, medicine and exercise. N95 masks, eye protection and medical grade disposable gloves are recommended prophylaxes. Wash your hands thoroughly upon returning home.

Home defense is never a bad idea. These conditions could last for months. No one knows. Be prepared in ways you can easily maintain to keep you and your family safe and comfortable.

Enjoy your sabbatical.

I’m in Boston. Care to mention name of hospital?

I’m very concerned about accompanying someone for immuno-chemo therapy this Thursday and Friday. (First round of 4–6 rounds).

This is an indolent cancer, and I wonder if the risk outweighs the benefits —considering the virus and its growing impact on hospital staff.

annr I would rather not mention the the hospital's name for understandable reasons but I assure you it's not one of the big hospitals that specialize in cancer treatments. I know this because I had spent quite a bit of time visiting them a few years ago when my wife was diagnosed with a rare cancerous brain tumor. She is two years cancer free thanks to the care she got from unarguably the best Doctors, Surgeons, and Nurses in the world. I'm sure the doctors will evaluate your case and make the right decision base on the current risk factors but as I discovered with my wifes treatment and recovery, Don't be shy and Ask lots of questions. FYI My neighbor across the street had the same type of treatments your having 3 years ago and he is absolutely fine. I wish you the best with your treatments and recovery whenever that may happen.

This is not for me, but a loved one.

This is at a medical center in Burlington. When we went 11 days ago, the doctor minimized the virus situation. I felt he ridiculed my comments about the severity and seriousness of the virus—sloughed me off—and the virus had not even gained much traction. (In fact, we discussed Italy, and my forecast was 100% correct, his was absurd.)

Sadly, I have 0 faith in medical experts. I am quite educated and intelligent and find my knowledge and instincts to be far more reliable—and the only reason I am alive. (This doctor talked down to me, and it takes most of them a very long time to realize that we are not the mental midgets they are comfortable talking to.)

Thank you for the encouragement, but I have no REAL reason to be encouraged.

The fact is, I don’t think they KNOW the answer (no one does), but to pretend this virus is business as usual is false IMO.

Trump is deploying the National Guard in NYC. NYS Gov Cuomo gave NYC Mayor De Blasio 24 hours to come up with a plan to keep people from going out all day and congregating in City parks.

I fully expect to see patrols in the parks and other public spaces.
 
Don't believe Trump has the authority to deploy the national guard. That authority rests with Cuomo.

I think medical people were initially doing the ostrich thing. But on the other hand, part of their job is to help people maintain cool heads and not over react.

I got new glasses (eye exam) about two weeks ago or early March. I told my eye doctor that one of the reasons I chose NOW was to avoid the close human proximity when the virus infections heat up as I suspected it would whether I liked it or not.

This is the reason for the hard core scare tactics being used by government officials and doctors. Scare the population enough and people will get the idea.

Trump is the President, and as such also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Last I heard the New York National Guard was still part of the United States military.

At drugstore and market today: people were courteous, respectful of others’ space. Music upbeat, people sober. Market erected large plexi dividers between cashiers and patrons. most things available except TP and cleaning products. About 50% used some kind of mask and/or gloves.

Allowed 2 packages of TP at drugstore.
 
I wish people were so disciplined here. They’re not.

I went to local very popular grocer and delicatessen today. There was one employee wearing a mask.

Not one shopper I encountered wore a mask. I kept a safe social distance while wearing an N95 mask and disposable gloves. One shopper brushed against me twice. I finally said aloud, “Please do not come close to me again.”

It was not encouraging.
 
Maybe that’s why it’s going gangbusters there. These people were all on board with script, purposeful, no BS. This was not business as usual.

Many employees wearing masks and gloves. In-store pharmacy was shuttered except a small opening at one end to allow payment and taking RX home. Pharmacists were out of view.

Under Title 32 the Governor has the authority to call out the National Guard for in-state purposes. However, if the President decides to do so, he can call up the guard for purposes of an emergency and place them under the control of the Federal Government.
Or did you mean that the NYNG no longer considers itself part of the United States Armed Forces? They are trained and equipped by the Federal Government, and so are required to respond to them when called...
