CS Norse Hawk + 25" haft = Viking Battle Axe Perfection

I was meaning more along the lines of having on a pack/hip sheath/ect.

Vec, i thought it might be a little annoying to have to carry it around in hand, even though its lightweight.

like brother wolf' mentioned - it is actually pretty nice.

my server was just busy, otherwise i would post some pictures of the idea - the hawk head nests in your off-hand's forearm, with the thead tucked over your elbow - the hawk just disappears until you need it, and it is handy to pull away brush, climb mud hills, or whack something with, with nary a thought.... you can trek for miles that way, and never have tired arms, etc.

ice axe loops and hawks go together very well - you can make a simple loop of cord aroiund your belt for a very similar effect, and just rig a retractable lanyard on the hawk for the top line to keep the hawk snug against your back.

i think if you are going to carry a hawk out of hand, sash carry is the all-time winner - if folks realized how great sashes are, the streets would look like Canadian Fur Traders invaded....

if you are carrying a bow or firearm, a modified quiver or bandoleer is a great choice.

I have a sash.

Thing is I probably look a bit odd out in the woods wearing woodland camo (or OD) BDU's, wearing a native styled sash and carrying a viking weapon.

Look weird? Lol - so what? I look incredibly weird when I hunt partly because what I'm wearing is functional and partly because its fun to look weird.

Besides - that's a really cool rig!

Wolf while the beckers are nice i think you need to get a traditional looking knife or mod one like you do your hawks brother:D The tactical looking stuff with your hawks stick out night and day!

I think Vec mentioned it, but ice axe loops work fine for carrying a hawk.

Another option if your pack has side slip pockets, you can use those. That's one thing I love about my Zulu, I can put the hawk in the slip pocket, bit down (yes, I have to use a bit guard), and I angle the haft so it's touching the shoulder strap. Very easy to get to without taking the pack off.

Another option if you're not carrying much is the bedroll. When I just carry gear on my belt, and my Duluth Pack bedroll and blanket rolled up over my back via a tumpline, the hawk can go right down the center of the roll, and be pulled out easily.

Although I do find myself more often than not with the hawk in hand, hooking things out of my path as I walk -- another good argument for the very long hawks.

I've yet to find many traditional modern bowies which appeal to me. Which is too bad because I really like bowies. They're either way to expensive, made out of stainless steel, or I just don't care for the design. I regret not buying a Bark River Rogue when I could because I really liked it.

However... I have currently taken apart a Camillus KaBar with the intention of transforming it into a coffin-handle bowie

My new Norse Hawk arrived in the mail today and I'm pleased to say it looks like Cold Steel has
really stepped up their QC.

It's absolutely perfect.

Okay I stripped the black paint off the head and patinated it to a nice dark brownish grey just like the other one.

Unfortunately I got the same results when using the 30" CS handle. There's not much material at the end to work with and when I got it reshaped right ... it fit properly right at the very end of the handle.

So, I won't be using them anymore for handle mods. Back to the laborious work of carving sledgehammer handles.

Anyway, this new CS Norse Hawk came on a 22" handle and I decided to sand it, stain it, and remount it. It's 3" shy of my other one, but still much more preferable to the diminutive handles you usually get. Major kudos to Cold Steel for providing a more proper length handle.

The Norse Hawk is really growing on me, Vec. The more I tinker with them and use them, the more I like them.

while i prefer my true hawks, the Norse in the softwoods country really shines as a tool IMHO.

regrettably, i don't get to softwoods country much. Scandinavia calls my heart.

enjoy it, brother.

That looks awesome, Wolf. Zombie getter for sure. I think the Ulu-like shape of the head lents itself to a good many tasks in the woods. It lacks the hammer poll of the trail hawks and such, but that can be compensated for pretty easily.

I've used my norse hawk to split the rib cage on a couple of moose, 1 elk and a few deer.
Works real good.
I put a longer handle on my trail hawk but haven't used it much.
I may be taking it hunting in a couple of weeks so I will give it a go.

What the hell was cold steel thinking when it discontinued the full sized 30in battle axe? Anyone still have one that they can post pictures of?
