Custom shop Special....the Battle Guard

Special runs are just that...special. I will try to get one, but it's no big deal if I don't. I am happy waiting for the regular line and then getting one of em. :)

But reading Erics post, I understood it to mean that they are making as many batches as they need to fill most of the orders. Say they receive 405 orders in those three days -- they will make four batches, but they would not make a whole batch of 100 knives just to fill the last 5 orders. Therefore, five people who placed orders would not receive knives -- thus, placing an order does not guarantee that you will get one.
This is what I meant when I guessed that production numbers might somehow be tied to orders. If 360joules has it right, then this system seems pretty fair.

As for the lottery, that was just hypothesizing about another possible system. I didn't think such would be the case.

While on the subject, the only thing that irks me about these special runs is that we may never get to see them again. i mean, they generate SO much interest that they'd surely sell as a production piece. isn't that what concept models are for? to gauge interest in order to make a production version in the future?

case in point the "tactical" line. the rat weiler made it into production and it's HUGELY popular/successful. the desert jack was a special run offered by this email pre-order system and it also wasn't begging for sales. then came the mastiff which sold out in minutes on the company store. when it is mentioned that these knives may never be made again, this is what causes the mad dash for these rat knives. if these concept models were turned into production models in one form or another, i doubt people would complain about not getting in on a special offer. i'd be cool to get in on these offers and have a prototype model, but if i missed it and knew a production model is gonna be available, there is no heartbreak. when less than 50 dog skinners were made and only a handful of people got them, and they'll never be offered again, then we're gonna see heartache and 100% markup in secondary prices.

i love swamp rat and i want to have ALL of their knives but it becomes a battle trying to get one. i'd gladly pay 100% upfront and wait a year if that guarantees me a special run. all of these special runs are "once in a lifetime" ordeal and this is what creates the hysteria!

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice knife, and i might just end up ordering one so i can resell it in 2 weeks for i'm guessing $350 shipped!

:D

If you don't stop that kind of talk, they're just going to start selling everything on E-Bay. Then the market can set its own prices.

It's not a lottery, it's not a drawing. We are accepting pre-orders, but if we receive orders for 101 knives, and we have 100 blanks we aren't running another batch for 1 knife. (numbers are hypothetical, I think we'll receive pre-orders for more than 100 ;) )

Also, an update, there have been some changes to the order process. It will probably be an email pre-order, however wait for the instructions to be posted later.

Thanks for the clarification Eric. That makes the odds a lot better.

I know the secondary markup causes some stress. I sold off my Battle Mistress a while back and was stressing about having to pay such a mark up for one. Luckily I forgot i had one on order from way back, but still I think once the new line is available you will see the secondary market prices drop down to a more reasonable level. It is the fact that there is no alternative blade available right now that srive the price up. Some folks can't wait and have to have it and will gladly pay a huge mark up (not complaining that is how I have funded several future purchases). This Battle Guard will fill the niche for the BR right now at a reasonable rate and should be very poplular.

Now here is crossing my fingers that I am not the straggler in this pre-order for these bad boys. :D

500jefferyDK, I've had both the CS Trailmaster and the original Battle Rat. IMHO the Rat handle is **HUGE** magnitudes more comfortable and secure than the TM handle due to the contoured shape of the Rat handles.

IME the CS TM handle is a tacky feeling kraton slab-sided stick covered with unnecessarily aggressive checkering that chews at your hand as you use it.

I found the Rat handle to spread the pressure of holding the knife over a larger area of my more-filled hand (i.e. no hot spots from corners on the handle or folds of skin to rub into blisters). To me, the Resiprene-C material used by the Swamp is a very good combination of solidity and grippiness.

That's my $0.02 worth on it.

Thanks for the information regarding the handle on the Swamp rat knife. It sure sounds like a great handle. I also like the angle on it¨and think that it will give a great grip.
I have never worked for long periods of time with the Trailmaster so I have never had the problems with blisters. I normally use a small Gerber axe if I need to chop allot or the large kukri.

Once again thanks for answering my question.

Cheers,

André

I'll second RokJok's answer. I have both - the BR is much more ergonomic, the blade is much more effective at about anything you're likely to use it for. After I got my BR, I lost interest in other large blades (oops, did I really say that:foot: ). The handle is one of the great features of SR knives in general and the BR/CT/HR/Bc in particular!

Thanks for the back-up words regarding the handle on the knife.
I sure hope that I will get my hands on one of these awesome knifes. I will test is on wild boars, to see how the grip is when your hands are soaked in blood.
I like the angel on the handle it looks very good for stabbing downward on boars and hogs. This handle looks much better then the Trailmaster handle angle.

Cheers,

André

I just got confirmation from Eric that I will be getting a Battle guard:D
That knife will draw first blood:grumpy: :D

Thanks Eric for the good news.

Cheers,

André

since i dont think anyone has asked this, and im curious,

how is the gaurd attached?

is it formed so that the normal gaurd keeps it from pushing past onto the blade (being caught between the handle and the normal gaurd), is it epoxied on?

What would be really awesome is a do-it-yourself guard installation so I could put them on basics. Or any Rat or Busse!
Now THAT would be cool!

THANK YOU ERIC, got my email and gonna start waiting for my Battle Guard. What am I going to chop to pieces first? Got eight weeks to decide, I wonder how fast it would eat a small cherry tree? Looks like a great hunting and camping season coming up!!!! Anyone have a bead on where we will be able to get a sheath from?

...yeah, I was wondering the same thing when I first saw the picture. It looks like some of the normal guard and spine have been ground off so the larger guard can slip on before the handle is attached. Very nice.
