can d2 and hc steel be forgwelded by hammer in hand method oh yea and stainless same question. any advice would help before i give it a try and waste time and money thanks

Gerome is right
The ss has to kept in an oxy free atomsphere
to begin with . The temp range for forge welding is very small.
A digital probe has to be used to keep the forge right.
Any hesitation and its a pile of unwelded scrap.
A very small billet say .5 wide x 1-2 inchs long could be done in foil double wraped. It is very hard to move ss under the hammer.
A press is the best bet BUT much experience with normalizing ect is needed to make the billet right!
Mike norris uses D2 in his ss damscus.
Mike also welds several types of ss and carbons together!
