I have a Schrade Old-Timer I bought over 10 years ago at a flea-market. I love that knife. The body is 3.25 inches and the main blade (there are three in all) is 2.5 inches. I have tried to maintain it as much as possible, but there are black stains on every blade. I can't remove them. Are those stains harming the blades?

Hi Card....
No, the stains are not harming the steel. What you described is called patina, the natural aging of high carbon steel. Old Timer knives are made from 1095 steel, an excellent steel and the patina that you are seeing will not harm your knife at all. It will actually protect it from surface rust. Most say it adds character to the knife, too.

If you wanted to remove it you would have to belt or hand grind them off with an abrasive. I use 320 and then 600 for a satin finish.

Just oil the knife like you usually do and it will be fine.
