Dirk Sheath with Leather Frog

I really had no idea what a leather frog was (probably still don't) until I looked it up. But research showed that Dirks were attached to kilts via a leather frog.
 
I would personally identify what you have shown in your photo as a dangler attachment and not a frog.

German WW2 Kar98K Mauser bayonets are used with frogs. The sheath itself is steel that stops even with the guard of the
bayonet when sheathed. The leather frog wraps around the throat of the sheath, and is secured by a metal stud on the sheath.
It then extends up with 2 thicknesses of leather, and has a belt loop which is located behind the handle of the bayonet. It gives
a flexible attachment of the bayonet to the equipment belt, and places bayonet at the right height. A search for "98k bayonet with frog"
should get you some photos. Some (for mounted troops) had a leather strap with stud that wrapped around the handle to further
secure it, and regular infantry frogs did not.
