DLC

Mine have Magnacut. I reached out to CRK with that question.
Magnacut is typically tempered at 350F so it would be a no go for my normal DLC. I do have a secondary DLC that I can use (through a fellow bladesmith) for cases like magnacut that is applied at 300F that would work and matches the DLC I normally use really well, but it's not quite as wear resistant.

Spyderco does DLC on Magnacut routinely, no sure how. I think MC low temperature sensitivity is not just a CPK thing.

There are many different DLC's and many different companies that apply them. Also, all DLC is not equal in regards to application or properties (I've tested dozens). So I'm sure they probably use one that is applied at a lower temperature

I can't remember the last knife I bought with DLC, but I know I have in the past. I'm surprised some folks would want it on various high end steels.
it's a durable coating that is WAY better than something like cerakote or other paints, and it makes the parts/blades black which is highly desirable just from a cosmetic point of view for some people.

Yeah as you say, I don't think it's a can't, just that it lowers the hardness. There's talk on Spyderco's forum about the satin PM2 Salt having higher hardness than the dlc version. (Haven't seen anyone post hard numbers yet however.)

Talking beyond MC, Kunwu runs a bunch of high performance steels with and without dlc. Sergio from Kunwu said it does lower the hardness, but the change is small enough they don't have to change their advertised hrc ranges, which for example on Vanax is just 1hrc (60-61). I'm sure that differs some by steel, though.

Because the HRC of DLC is 72, you can use the sides of a coated blade as a finishing steel (edge leading) for your circa 60HRC blades.

I suppose. Not something I would be interested in doing...but okay.

I reached out to CRK and they stated having knife coated by a 3rd party voids all warranty.
That is an expected response from them. Literally anything you do to a CRK “voids their warranty”.

Even something as simple as changing thumb studs or maybe an engraving on the scales.

My question would be about affecting the heat treat from the DLC.

Sounds like if a DLC is done on a CRK, it should be the S35 or 45, not Magnacut.

Since Josh’s last DLC I missed out on, I’ve really wanted to get a large inkosi w/scales fully DLC’d. That fully blacked out version looks so bad ass!

I just have to buy one now in time, then send to Josh. Now I don’t want any competition on the S45V’s in the CRK’s subs guys 🤣 🤫
