Grip retention is important , but in my opinion one also gets more control and power when using a lanyard properly on a short handled axe.
I use the same technique as when using a Dan Bong , a.k.a. "The Bonebreaker" short fighting stick.
I find that this technique works particularly well when using my Gerber Back-Paxe.
The Back-Paxe is dismissed as being useless by many , but when correctly used , some serious chopping can be done with this little 9 incher .
Tomahawks are made for throwing, but if you will never throw your tomahawk,have at it! Personally I would never use a lanyard on a tomahawk or axe, machete. There is an inherent danger using a lanyard on these tools.
