Does Anyone Need A $475 Boxcutter?

Got mine, and had reason to use it at work recently.

Like it. I like the lock a lot. As a lefty I like that it is mostly ambidextrous, aside from the clip, which isn't uncomfortable. Didn't take long before quick one-handed operation felt natural. My old one is a Milwaukee Tools boxcutter, and I like that this is so much less chonky and boxy, it actually works in the pocket.

My only criticism so far is that I feel like there's a way to give the lock screw a fixture that would allow hand-operation, so it wouldn't require a screwdriver to change blades. Maybe for v2.

Some of the folks here complaining about the price are funny. They sound... like non-knife-obsessive people I know talking about knives. "You paid what for a Chris who?"

I think of it like this… what would I rather have, a $475 box cutter or two or three USA made Spydercos? Hell, why would I even need a $475 box cutter?! There’s a lot better places to spend your money. And if I NEEDED A BOX CUTTER I could just use one I already have or go and get a $10 one at the hardware store🤣

Looking forward to the next drop and a few more reviews.

There are no other options really for this style of box cutter, I have the Spectrum Energetics boxcutter and enjoy that, but the Hawk is something else again

More likley to use a box cutter though.

I've liked it since I first saw it but like everyone else I'm not willing to spend that much $$ on it. I've been wishing they make a production or oem company version of it for the common man.

You mean knife person don’t you? A “common man” won’t spend more than $20 on a box cutter.

Look at Exceed Designs - Tirant Razor V3
or Serge Knives make a nice looking version with the Slipjoint Razor Gen2, but not the lock, waiting to see if he will come out with some other scale options on that.

Got a turnback knife TBK-V2 - BRASS ordered.

Maybe I was a bit quick saying no other options.

I have the The Utilizer by Spectrum Energetics too (76g as is), it was iirc the only hence the best US-redesigned tfuk (da fu*k??) 5 years ago.

The Shortcut weighs 64g aha. I am not so sure about the likability of the pocket clip or of the ergonomics but am looking forward to the next drop as well. Meanwhile i've bought the Razor V3 (59g-68g depending on configuration) by x-design tirants, also some 140$ shipped in this useful config:

I am eyeing the Shortcut but believe at this point that between the two "new" models i'd like the Razor better for #realedc because of the Razor's pocket clip, ergonomics, and lanyard attachment. I've been carrying it 24/7 non-stop, that is erh whenever i got my pants on ;)

For the people who bought one I hope they are happy with them but that is too much money for me. For that kind of money I am looking a something from CRK.

My guess is that people buying this already have a few CRKs, or similar. Can’t imagine many folks buying this as their first or only expensive cutlery.

I have a Shortcut from the first drop. It is excellent for what it is, as expected from any Hawk Designs knife / tool.

Is it worth it? I don't know, probably not, but is a $500 knife of any kind really worth it? There is no $500 knife on earth that the materials in it really justify that price. It's all a matter of perspective. Fancy knife assholes like us are not typically all that concerned with "value", at least I know I am not. It's more a matter of what is pleasing to you. At this price point, knives are just as much art as they are tool, even spartan designs like this. It's a tiny mechanical piece of art that I can carry with me if I so choose. I even found a Damascus razor blade, so mine is even less practical, as I don't necessarily want to use if for something that I would ruin the blade with like a normal utility knife. I basically use it like I would any other expensive knife, not like a utility knife.

I also think it's kind of cool to be able to say that I am carrying the worlds nicest utility knife, and having it be true.

Anyway, if anybody is considering this whenever they do another drop, I would say go for it. If you know what you are buying, and you like the design, I can't really imagine anyone being disappointed with the Shortcut.

It’s a nice collectible for TSA.

What makes it more likely to be taken by TSA than any other knife? Honestly, if you don't have any blades with you, you probably could take this through TSA and be fine. Not that I would try that, but theoretically...

I would never spend 500 USD on this box cutter, but I can understand the appeal to some other people : the design, fit and finish are very nice.

It isn’t any more likely than any other blade to be confiscated by TSA. It is however an expensive trinket to lose.
