I'm brand new on this forum, but I have a lot of experience with sharp things. I'm wondering what people here carry as their edc. My edc knife is a Benchmade AFO 2 automatic. This is a link to view it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2aS82jGPx5VZDliUXZLZk95cmc/view?usp=sharing
I'm in Oregon where automatics are completely legal to own and carry. That said, I have a mini griptillian coming in here: http://www.google.com/url?q=http://...sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNGKafXq39HpZbA6PI5EKWPPncSSgQ
The mini grip has a nylon handle and M4 steel. What blade style do you guys prefer?

Drop point here. My EDC is a Protech TR-5..love it.
I have a Rat Worx MRX on it's way which I'll carry in Nevada and Arizona when I go there because California is a joke.
I do have a Smith & Wesson tanto I carry from time to time but prefer a drop point way better.

Drop, clip, spear, sheepsfoot, wharncliffe, pen, spey. No tantos.

When i was new to knives, i thought tantos were cool.
The more I started using knives, the more i came to appreciate the drop point. Much more practical for my EDC needs. I don't own any tanto knives at all.

Tanto sometimes is nice looking but in practical aspect it'll never beat full flat grind drop/clip/spear/sheepfoot point blade.

Tantos are great. It's like having two knives. You have generally a straight edge or a slight belly that terminates in a point that can be used for draw cuts or precision work, and then you have a secondary straight edge and a reinforced tip for less graceful work.
I just happen to have this one with me as I type this, so I took a picture just now:

I know they're "tacticool" and all, but I find them genuinely utilitarian. Anything a drop or sheep can do, a Tanto can do - and more. (except skinning)

Drop point. I have a SOG Flash II with a Tanto blade. If it hadn't been really cheap I would detest it even more than I do. I like just about any blade that can be found on a traditional, and will consider unconventional blades, but the drop point is the most versatile and useful for me.

I used to hate tantos thinking they were cheap mall ninja garbage. I gave one a try and now they have a place in the rotation. Tastes change. And yeah the suck at skinning but I don't plan on taking a buck at work.

I thought I would run into a but more of a mixed response here. I like my tanto because it can punch through heavier materials. That said, a drop point is much easier to sharpen. I think once it comes in, the mini grip will be my main edc for utilitarian purposes. Plus it has stronger steel

Drop point but I'd like to try a Tanto and a wharncliff

The only thing I don't use my benchie for is work. There, it's just too hard for me to justify using a knife like that for work. I just use a straight razor for that. There's no way I'm using my expensive knife to pop open units of lumber

Howdy and welcome!

When carrying a modern blade, which I often do, I carry a drop point.
(Usually I got a stockman or other traditional pattern in my pocket.)

I had a tanto but a few minutes on the belt sander changed it's point of view. It turned into a drop point. I will never own another.

I need one of these. The black is pretty attractive in this (safe Queen) model.:thumbup:

I don't think you're supposed to use a belt sander on most knives. And that's why. If I need to sharpen my Benchmade, I'll use their lifesharp warranty. Mainly because I don't want to deal with sharpening it myself

I prefer drop point, but I have a little of everything.

Nice. I think the reason my tanto knife is so much better than any other folder I own is because it's Benchmade. I lubed it up and was working the oil into it and took off a chunk of my finger. I guess tomorrow will be fun with my taped up finger and gloves
