After fooling around making my own knives for the last twenty, and knowing about stellite and talonite, it is time to try a piece of Talonite. I did searches on this subject but still have some dumb quesions.

Dumb question 1. How hot can it get during grinding before some thing happens to affect the edge hold or hardness (or lack thereof)
#2 Will grinding and water dipping barehanded work?
#3 I know it is tough on belts bits etc.Are there any other dumb questions I should ask but I am too dumb to even think of?

Hey Trouthead, there are no dumb questions! I get asked th0ose questions a lot.

The anneal point on Talonite is 2250 deg far. Therefore heat isnt really a concern at all hand grinding. I rough grind with leather gloves and water dip every pass or 2, usually cause my gloves are getting hot. I dont reccomend dipping in water if you have it hot enough to see any red color, but let it cool some and then dip. You could conceivably crack it dipping while red hot.

Talonite is certainly tough on belts, but with the new ceramic abrasives out now it is fairly easy to grind. I use the 3-M 967 Cubitron "Yellow" belts from either Pop Knives or Koval to rough grind. The Yellow belts outlast the 3-M 977 almost 2 to 1. Great belts for Talonite and Titanium!

talonite is NOT affected by heat......period. It grinds like mildly hardened steel...... go to http://www.carbideprocessors.com/ for more info
