EDC Karambit Help- Knife Noob Needs Help

I want to give you credit for this post. After reading the first exchange you had with Charlie Mike in the first three posts of this thread I didn't have much hope for a positive outcome. This post shows a lot of maturity. It takes courage to admit when you've been wrong, and most would have just dug in their heels and refused to listen to reason. I don't care how old you are, you handled this very wisely.

As for a knife suggestion, I would suggest you start out with a Swiss Army Knife or Case Peanut, as they are dang near guaranteed to not get you in trouble as long as you aren't looking for trouble. If those aren't interesting enough for you, check out the Kershaw line as they make some pretty inexpensive knives that would get you started down the path of knowing what you like and what you don't. If you're looking for something a little better a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian would be my suggestion. I've been carrying a Griptilian for a couple of weeks now, and it makes a wonderful EDC. The mini version is less likely to be taken as a weapon in my opinion, and thus less likely to get you in trouble. If you want something less weapony, but not as pedestrian as a SAK or Peanut take a look at the Buck 500 series. It's a nice lineup of lockback knives that are more gentlemanly, but still very reasonably priced.

Thanks a lot are there any less "aggressive"-looking hawk knives that you would recommend

A hawkbill knife? Why, after Cory Hess was so generous with his credit to you, and his advice, did you ignore it entirely?

I'm out...my head hurts.

It was curiosity I looked at all the stuff he mentioned and I'm just going to stick with my Swiss Army Knife so I was just wandering. I'm going to start saving and wanted to find something to save for you my good sir are strange and very intolerant.

I do have a suggestion, but it's probably not one that you'll like. I would take a look at a hawkbilled slipjoint. There are many out there that can be had for under $20 that are decently built and will let you know if you find the blade useful. I find a hawkbill blade very useful in a very narrow range of tasks. I like to keep one in the garage, but it's not versatile enough for me to consider it for an EDC blade. Of course, there are many who would disagree with me. It is such a personal choice that I think it would be wise to carry one for a while before you invest a lot of money in a knife that you may or may not like.

Take a look at a Colt KB117, Rough Rider 1144, or the previously mentioned Boker Plus Hawkbill. A Case 2616 is an American made version that can be found for under $30.

None of those options look nearly as sexy as a karambit, but they have distinct advantages in your case.

Very seldom is a slipjoint knife confused for a weapon. A slipjoint is much less likely to get you in trouble with the law, your coworkers, or your parents.

All of these knives are considerably less expensive than a karambit. The Rough Rider can be had for around $10, and they are a highly regarded name in the slipjoint world.

If you are truly looking to use the hawkbill as a utility knife, a slipjoint will let you gain experience in that regard. If you decide later that you still want a karambit you'll have a good understanding of how the blade will perform as a utility knife.

Lastly, you're already familiar with slipjoints because that's what your SAK is. Carry your SAK in one pocket and your new hawkbill in the other. For the first couple of weeks you'll naturally want to use the hawkbill because it'll be a novelty. After a couple months of carrying both see which one you prefer. If you decide that the hawkbill is for you, then you can start saving some money for a more expensive version.

That's really good advice. Thanks!

This all really begs the question no one has asked yet...why does an "EDCMaster" need our advice anyway? After all, he's a "master"...

This little boy really needs to take the advice of those who said to just settle on a SAK for now and not go buying and carrying something that is almost certain to end up getting him into trouble.

I don't want to come back to see this thread bumped 21 months from now with our resident "master" telling us "you're right John, that was a bad idea...8 months of having to shower sitting down really wasn't worth it."

I agree with what Corey said and also would like to applaud your attitude and maturity shown here. That being said I'd like to extend an offer to you. Please email or message me.
If you need my email, post a visitor message asking for it.

Don't be an a-hole and if you had half a brain you would know that its perfectly legal. Also if you could read you would know that I have said before that I won't be a some douche who goes twirling it around in public. ITS GOING TO BE USED STRICTLY AS A UTILITY KNIFE

If you need a EDC go with opinel 4 or 5 or 6 or spyderco grasshopper (will cost you 10-15$)you are a minor so you need a knife that look like edc knife and not like a self defence knife
no cop will like the idea of a minor carring a knife.
If you really want to train with a karambit Cold steel have a line of trainers made form heavy polypropylene for 15$ I think

Cory's advice is excellent! He's absolutely correct, when he says you will use the SAK more often over time. I keep my SAK Cadet in my pocket 24/7.

This is a little OT, but you'll get the point. In Louisiana it is a crime to conceal a "weapon." Now they don't define what a weapon is, but I am able to conceal a handgun with my CHP. That being said, the only thing concealed in my pocket, that could potentially be considered (although unlikely) a weapon, is my SAK Cadet. I have a handgun for self defense, so I don't need anything else to even give an officer reason to believe I'm carrying a knife as a weapon, rather than a tool. Carrying a karambit in my pocket could be used against me one day, and that's just something I don't want to bother with.

Thanks to the kind people on the thread and to the rude people have a nice day making people sad. To all the people calling me little kid I'm 17. I'm done with this thread and probably the website as well thanks for the information.

I have nothing useful to contribute but, that straight knife in J.W. Besinger's pic is amazing-looking. I don't think I'd ever carry anything else if I had that. Just sayin ;)

If I could carry just these... I probably would.

Well, it seems that there has been more than enough trolling and trouble making by some regulars here especially the professional mycologist to start issueing infractions.

Next off topic comment?
