I got a special surprise in the mail yesterday.

Someone very thoughtfully gifted me a D2 knife and sheath from two of my favorite makers. Me and Lorien.

I know this was intended as a pure gift and not in trade for anything but I've got this ugly old knife of mine that needs more use than I'm giving it.

Please consider it a thank you gift.

Thank you Phil.

Nathan,

You (and Jo) work your butts off day in and day out to design and produce world class knives at great value prices while graciously dealing with hordes of rabid customers trying to tell you how to run your business and what to make so they can get more of what they want as soon as possible. Which means NOW! And then the process repeats on the next model… The fact that you put up with that constant stress and still regularly find time to post and share interesting knifemaking content and converse with your customers on a personal level is very rare in the knifemaking community. Blade Forums is littered with dead sub-forums from knife makers who did not see the value in having a relationship with regular, occasional, and/or new customers. You are exceptional in this regard and it is much appreciated by your loyal fans here, old and new.

I know this level of commitment and focus comes at a price to your personal time and patience. I often wonder how you find time to enjoy relaxed family time just doing things you like to do. When in a rare moment of personal reminiscing, you mentioned that you wished you still had one of the small run of original D2 EDC’s from 2016/2017, it was an easy decision to send you mine as a small token of thanks for everything you do for all of us year after year. This was meant to be a one way straight gift to acknowledge you.

And then I see your reply above… I knew you were very competitive in Blade Sports, shooting, cooking mouthwatering steaks, etc. I didn’t know you were competitive in generosity too. I can’t believe you went over the top in response with a strikingly handsome one-off DEK3. The black handle scales and dark acid washed flats really highlight the beauty of the satin grinds. My first thought upon seeing that was that it would look right at home on Batman’s utility belt. Wow! You are too generous my friend!! I know now to never gamble with you one on one.

Thanks!

Phil

So here I am this afternoon waiting in line at the post office all glum, sulky you might say. Picking up the scotch was a poor second to the new knife I expected. As I waited for the lady to bring back my parcel I refreshed the tracking in the forlorn hope that my knife had made it but nope.
She walks out with two packages! Could it be? No it’s probably something for my wife, as she sits it on the bench and asks for my signature I try looking through the distorted and scratched Perspex but can’t be sure. She slides it over, I read the label and let go with a silent F yeah. Thank her and wish her a good weekend, stop to buy some poppies for the upcoming Remembrance Day on the way out and race back to my Ute. Rip open the package and here she is!

I like to make the point that no knife, no matter how much I want to like can escape an unbiased critique. I’ve been going over this thing with a fine tooth comb and I must say it is possibly the closest knife to perfection I’ve ever bought.
I can’t promise it’ll have a quiet life, it’s going to be my edc for work and general duties as well as butcher its share of animals too. But to me, that’s what they’re made for.
Thank you Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist Jo the Machinist Jo the Machinist and the rest of the CPK crew. It may be my first but it won’t be my last 😁

Good knife, good scotch and a sunset in the great southern land.
