you realize this could start a whole new thread that might compete with the "what are you carrying today" thread....

Show us your tacky "collector knife" thread.... annual prize for the most tasteless. After all, they have "ugly Christmas tie" contests, and "world's ugliest dog" contests...

I love that the Zombie scrimshaw wasn't enough, and they had to etch the blade also. Hopefully they got the pile sides too.

I think these are for people who collect knives, but aren't into knives. If that makes sense, the kind of person you could show an old rare Case Tested era and they'd say "Its just an plain old pocket knife, I got a Special edition Case with Elvis on it! Now THATS going to be worth something soneday!" I noticed that most things made to be collectable tend not to be worth much later. However things never meant to be collected have greater value. Such as antique glass target balls, they were made to be destroyed, so now rare examples are worth thousands to collectors. I collect not for potential value, but simply because I enjoy knives. From online research this is the most valuable Case I own

Rather plain compared to the special collectors editions huh? My biggest enjoyment from acquiring it is that I picked it up far below what I can find other examples selling for. But I really like it because its different from a run of the mill medium stockman

Good points...time to sell my Mickey Mouse trapper

Having said all that I actually do like the Halloween barlow they did this year. I wish I would have gotten one, but after paying for the forum knife and some purchases from the exchange I couldn't justify the money for it.

One thing I've seen consistently in the CCC publications sent to me, is the emphasis Case places on getting & keeping multiple generations of family members involved in knife collecting. Lots of articles of Case-hosted family events, with pictures of Grandparents, parents and young sons & daughters all together & holding up their favorite pocketknives for a photo.

With Case's emphasis on keeping kids involved in collecting, I can see their possible motivation for some of the designs the rest of us may not find so attractive. The green 'Zombie' Russlock pictured earlier might be one of those knives a lot of kids would find 'cool', although most of the rest of us wouldn't necessarily see that appeal. But this speaks again to Case's marketing savvy in attracting new fans to their knives, one way or another. And I can respect that.

Most every traditional knife maker out there is gone or just ghosts of their former selves. Case is still around. I reckon they understand their market and sales numbers.

And who am I to tell another buyer what is ugly and what isn't? I don't like most stag or Damascus. I think most of it is ugly. But it's super duper traditional. When people post pictures of them, I don't disparage them. I don't like those flashy knives either but if others do, then good on them.

I think people should buy what they like regardless of what anyone else thinks.

In their recent Case Collectors Club magazine that arrived here yesterday they have their limited edition collectors club barlow that in white bone that is tattooed every which way with herringbone cross hatching and signature etching and the like. More than I would want,,,but if it floats your boat,,,Great!

Then you get into the Holiday season offerings. They have the Christmas Magician's knife. A two blade barlow with the jigged red bone/green bone covers. I think I like that one. I have a smooth red bone/green bone peanut I picked up about a decade back.

Model # 10839 but I could not find any online pictures of it.

I was in the CCC for a couple of years. Seems like I recall there were something like 30,000 members (Case says in 2016 the number of Lifetime members was 11,000). These limited edition are generally pretty small runs - 500 to 2500. So it only takes a small percentage of the CCC members to want a particular knife to sell them all.

Also, keep in mind that some of those folks are true Collectors. With a capital C. They had beautiful displays, and would have specific patterns or styles that they would want to try to get every one of.

There was one thread on the CCC forum about what knife you carried that day, and there were some posts from some incredulous guys saying - "Wait, you mean you actually CARRY them?" Or some that had hundreds of knives, but who only carried the same yellow Delrin Trapper for the past 20 years.

Would ruin the value of the knives (to them) if they had ever been carried or sharpened.

jc57 jc57 I actually find the idea that some people would be aghast at carrying their knives to be profoundly disturbing:eek: Not joking either. Brings me to another aspect, the obsessive hoarding of series or trying to get every one is pretty alien to me to, but I wonder if these collector series might impact on build quality or F&F? I mean, if they're never used or handled, just kept in a display cabinet or box, such things as gaps, blade-play, mismatching, blade rubbing liners, proud springs, non existent W&T poor edges etc etc -REAL issues -do not matter. But they do;)

I take the very existence of these knives, and the apparent profitability of them for Case (otherwise why else?), as confirmation that the market is much, much bigger than us forum folks. While there doesn't seem to be any doubt that we have the ear of a smaller operation like GEC, which makes stuff that we are particularly apt to appreciate (and which the wider market is less likely to shell out the extra $$$ for), Case could probably not care any less about what we like and want. Its no wonder we can't ever get Case interested in producing a forum knife with our paltry numbers.

This thread reminded me that there is at least one Case knife that I like that some folks might consider gaudy. I had looked for one in the past but had no luck so I basically gave up my search.

After this thread got started I began looking again and thanks to a very cooperative forum member, I have one just like this shipping today.
