Fallkniven PHK

Yes,I can see where it would be easy to clean. That really is a great looking skinner.I want one!

Has anyone owned a PHK for awhile and can comment on how they either like or dislike it?
Have a chance to pick one up on close out pretty cheap and really like the size and style of blade. Main use would be skinning and quartering moose, deer, and the occassional bear.

I don't have a PHK user, but as a general comment Fallkniven knives are very high quality and they are designed by people who are avid outdoorsmen and hunters.

The design of both the PHK and H1 is practical for their intended purpose as hunting/skinning knives.

Try posting this inquiry over on the Fallkniven forum. There are some avid hunters there that I'm certain can discuss the merits of these knives from a hands on perspective. http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/showforum.php?fid/65/

If time is a factor for you to pick one up at a significant discount, go for it and try it out for yourself, if you aren't pleased with it, used Fallknivens sell very well and you probably won't loose much $, if any.

Didnt know they had there own forum, thank you. Decided to buy one as the price was marked down to $179! Can't lose money on that.
Thanks

Finally made it to the store and picked it up. Very impressive build. The curve of the blade should work great when skinning/quartering moose and bear skinning.
Never owned a convex grind knife. Blade is not shaving sharp out of the box. Any suggestions for a sharpening touch up? Or are they knives designed not to be that sharp?

No, like any quality blade, Fallkniven's will take a shaving sharp edge, and the 3G steel will hold the edge well.

How do sharpen the knives you currently own?? You can sharpen your PHK the same way, if you so choose.

If you want to retain the convex edge, then do a goggle search on convex sharpening, there is a ton of videos and tutorials on how to sharpen convex edges with sandpaper/mousepad or sandpaper laid over top a leather strop.

Convex sharpening is very easy to learn with a bit of practice. At least that was my experience.

Be aware that the SGPS core of your 3G blade is hardened to a high HRC (62 I believe) and is very abrasion resistant. It will take a bit of extra time to sharpen this steel regardless of the method used.

Just learning to use my Apex Edge sharpener. Did see a video on Utube for convex sharpening using 2,000 grit sandpaper but think I'll wait until the knife gets dull first, lol.
