Farid CPM-REX-121 ‘K2’ possible folder project

Evening all,

This thing is a beefy and huge. After chatting with Farid, it seems this steel would be well suited to a convex grind. So when I put a convex on this blade, I just couldn't stop grinding! I'm a believer of Murray Carter's advice on sharpening...you can't just sharpen the main bevel...you have to sharpen the whole blade! Well this may or may not be what he really meant, but here we are. After wearing down many of my stones and purchasing a new DMT diamond X-Coarse/Coarse plate, and going through lots of sand paper...I finally got my blade just about where I want it. It is also shaving sharp (I'm still trying to figure out the best finish on this blade but so far, I think finer = better)! Sorry Farid, I inadvertently ground away your "FARID" logo on the secondary bevel of the blade :(.

Also, the steel is LUCKILY tougher than I thought. Like a dummy, I accidentally dropped this blade (open) on my tile floor and luckily it did not break. It did land on the cutting edge and dinged up the blade a LITTLE...but my floor took on more damage.

So far, I have been sharpening, grinding and sanding...I hope to do some cut testing in the next week....but I'm all out of elbow grease at this point.

So here's some knife porn for all the fans of the K2 REX121:

WOW. Fantastic job you did on that K2, GnK! How long did that take?

This polish/convexing happened over a couple of days off/on. I would say all together it took 4 hours. It was all manually done!

I've got Leo's 'K2' here at the shop and just finished sharpening it up. Here are some pics:

At the moment, I have it at 20 degrees per side, stropped down to 0.5um. After reading a little more about the steel, it might be worth it to take it down a little lower. I spent a total of 5 minutes per side building the bevels and the progressed through diamond plates from 100#-1000#, then 1200# and 1600# ceramics, then strops. I had a couple of deep scratches left so I dropped back to my Shaptons which worked terrifically and very quickly. After the Shaptons, I went on to strop it.

Damn, that edge looks great Clay! I'm liking the convex on GnK's and will probably end up going that route, having taken mine down to about 28 degrees already.

I just picked up one of your K2's in Rex-121 on eBay, would like to chat with you about it for some advice (specifically sharpening recommendations). My email is kiel@cox.net. Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks,

Bill Kiel
