I know this has been discussed before. I just can't seem to find it in the archives.
My uncle asked for advice on using a farriers rasp for a blade. I told him you had to test them for type\quality of steel and can't remember the exact method. ?heat it up and smack it?
Any help is appreciated.
Safety glasses first of course.

I was hopping that someone with more up to date info on rasps would go into this one but I guess not so here goes.
Problem one is that "most" rasps are case hardend which means only the outside of the rasp will harden. Which means by the time you remove the teeth you have a chunk of mild steel.
However to test your rasps heat them about light cherry red then dunk it into water or warm oil. If the steel is hardenable you should be able to put it in a vice and snap it of with little effort. If it just bends, well you can make a practice knife out of it.
