Fat Bastard Field Knife Picture thread

I was watching it while I posted that first pic. Glad I got two of them now for sure. Probably going to make me sell my last ESEE 5. I mean the ESEE is perfectly fine in a TEOTWAWKI scenario. Even though it’s not stainless, I just like the added corrosion resistance of the D3V.

Just a warning...

I've been SICK AS HELL since last Saturday. I caught something around Thanksgiving that really got me. I had chronic and acute Asthma as a child and would spend a week in the hospital, about three times a year (*with Pneumonia). I can't really remember being this sick, since before my preteens.

Anyhow, I'm not out of the woods yet, but poured my first Jack "Bonded" and Zero, in about two weeks, about 30 minutes ago. So, I'm going to "wax poetic" a bit. Just ignore me. I'm just wasting bandwidth, as usual.

Watched Joe X for the first time tonite specifically the fat bastid vid. Needless to say I feel more confident with my purchase decision after watching it in action. Kinda surprised the preorder didnt break the forum.

I was shocked by this ^^^, too. I noticed it pretty early on and was going to ask about it in the "Random Thoughts Thread", but didn't want to step on any toes.

Having been around trucks, guns, and motorcycles all my life, I know from experience that some of the slowest selling models can become some of the most sought-after, once some time passes. I don't wish regret on anyone, but think that there may be a few souls, down the line, who wish they'd gotten-in on the pre-order.

Just my humble opinion. Time will tell.

Like you, I'm elated that I was able to score two. I ABSOLUTELY KNEW that I wanted to try to do so, when Nathan was still pretending that he was undecided as to whether or not he was going to build them. I post "pretending" because I knew that he would.

I'm a quarter-inch-thick "field knife" guy. As I've posted many times, my favorite knife in the whole World is my TOPS 107E. Beyond that, three of my most-used knives are my 107E, my Becker BK-2, and my ESEE-5. I have beaten the TOPS and Beckers more than I'd care to admit.

For me, there is just something about a robust tool that I know will go the distance, even when the sun and temps are dropping, and I start to get sloppy and careless. When I start to do stupid sh!t with my knives, I like knowing that they can handle me being an assclown. (*That's the same reason that I JUMPED on the opportunity to score a BK-82)

Beyond all the above, I am blessed enough to own two "Basic" SDFKs and two DEK2s. I don't look at any of my Carothers knives as fragile and treat all of them equally as harsh. However, for me, the SDFKs and DEK2s have always struck me as the "extreme" variants. (*I remember Nathan challenging folks to try to break the DEK2s)

For me, a FBFK is just a logical addition to my other "extreme" Carothers knives. Likewise, it seems to nicely fill the space between the Basic SDFK and the DEK2.

Your mileage may vary.

I'll be curious to see your pictures comparing the dek2 and the Fatty.

This.

Part of the hesitation, I’m sure, stems from Nate’s tragic timing so close to the holidays, and the fact that it is an utterly pointless and worthless knife co-designed by a cretin begging to be culled from the herd via natural selection, but the fact remains that scarcity has a profound impact on desirability. Some of us still remember when a skinner or an original shiv would sit unsold for a long, long time… now they’re a Bitcoin equivalent.

DEK 3 could be had in preorder for under $400. D3V or MC.

I already have 1/4” field knife in my SDFK, so the fat bastard’s blade geometry in that length knife didn’t really set off any bells for me. I don’t really plan on utilizing it in any way that Joe X did, so I passed and saved my spot for others! Besides, I’m still not over my honeymoon phase with this SDFK. For 5” fixed blades and less, I typically like them thin, but that’s just me n

He doth protest too much, methinks.

(Though I agree. I have the DEK 2 for a relatively compact, yet indestructible knife...and some larger CPKs for the occasions where the bigger guns may be required.)

I have the new EDC that I absolutely love and have put through the paces over the last few months or so. It has kicked the folders out of my pocket for now. I also have the large CPKs for backpacking, camping, fire pit duties, etc. It’s hard to beat the ergos on a CPK knife.
