Forgive me if there is already a thread related to this, but since Im gonna start trying to catch some channels soon I thought Id approach the subject :D Right now I have some old chicken gizzards which have soaked in chicken blood with a tub of livers. I like how the gizzards stay on the hook better than livers, Im hoping they can retain some of that "liver flavor" ;) Anyways, I am interested to hear some of your favorite catfish baits/secret recipes. Ive heard that people like to use stonerollers and suckers as well but have no real means of obtaining any so I guess livers will do for now :D Happy Fishing!

I started using punch baits this past year. Magic Stick it stays on a treble hook for a long time , even in strong current. catches fish like mad.

When I had a boat I often caught dozens of channels and blues by using small shad caught with a casting net. I could catch the bait any day , then dump them in a cooler of ice to keep them fresh. There were times when it was nonstop action, all day and night.

Chicken breast marinated in WD40..... Don't laugh 'till you've tried it... Works like Gangbusters in Santee-Cooper SC ...!!

That I am going to try. HAHAHA

Chicken livers, nightcrawlers, shad or whatever gets into my cast net. :o

I have tried to make my own dip baits with various success, usually a mixture of cornmeal or sugar corn pops cereal, sardines/shrimp/shad or any mixture there of, chicken blood, livers, cheese and about anything else I can think of to put in it. It catches fish but not anything unbelievable.

If you want to catch eaters it is hard to beat livers, if you want to catch big uns, live shad, bluegill or eels are tops. Chris

I knew a guy that would sink a 50 lb bag of cheap dry dog food and come back later . He generally had good luck. He would poke some holes and place a rock or somthin in it and offer it up .

beef or chicken liver. know a guy who has this secret recipe. i know he uses potatoes, bread and catfood to make a paste. he swears by it. the cats up here don't get all that big

Chris;...Give it a try it DEFINITELY works over the freshwater mussel beds in Lake Marion...Even better if you have a FoodSaver vacuum system

BTW... did you retire back @ Fayetteville or are you living elsewhere?

bluegills is my favorite bait whole live for the good one's cut for smaller cats . I did have a lot of luck with king cat chicken blood dough ball last fall

Ron,
I am still in Fayetteville, I am going to school full time, who says they can't teach an old dog new tricks. LOL Chris

I have used chicken liver in the past. Last year my cousin bought some stink bait called secret7. We caught a bunch of catfish with that stuff.

I fish for channel cats mostly in lakes, where they seem to like cut bluegill or other sunfish. The bass also like that quite a bit too.

Here they make bright red spiced hot dogs that the smaller cats seem to love on the right day.

This!

I know it sounds crazy but it works. Had someone tell me about this a decade ago. I started spraying dog hot dog weenies and putting it on blood bait and other forms of dough. Works like a charm.

I have had good luck on bagworms also. manicuring scissors are needed to get them out.

See, this thread is why I come here, dipbait I have never heard of those being used for bait, just like the WD-40, GREAT STUFF! Chris

When I was a kid Id try anything. Catalpa worms, bagworms... Night crawlers would not catch near the fish as green worms dug out of the storm sewers. Some of you might know about them. They are green ,real stiff , and full of poop. I use to sell them.

Catalpa worms when you can get them. I've found nothing beats them.
+1 more :D. they work so well i have caught big catfish at paylakes when nobody else was having any luck.

there were a bunch of them in my area but some guys came in a few years ago from another town and picked the trees clean. now the trees that used to be loaded are lucky to have a few on it. a buddy who has some on his land that they picked clean hopes to catch them tresspassing this year and put a stop to it :D

I have another. I live close to the Mississippi. Id ride my bike to the bait store and get the dead minnows for free. Caught a lot of river cats on them.
