Field knife

A nice bonus then for you rodriguez7, is that Nathan has started to leave a little bit more metal at the tip to reinforce it. I think this was inspired by Lorien throwing it. It should hold up even better than it would have before. I don't think the pry bar on the pommel will be useful for this task, and in a rushed state without time and facilities to clean it before hand, will certainly contaminate your sheath.

I thought Nate did my new one up extra special with a chubby point, but if that's a running change, I approve!

Luckily I had the good sense (an unusual feat for me) to enter my name and I seem to be the 9th one from the bottom up and about 40 to go yet, counting the other way. With the pace which I have been monitoring, I anticipate to have my second CPK-FK order ready for fulfillment in about 3-4 months which will be great. Now, onto the EDC preorder list (Nathan I know that you read these ;) )

I was NOT expecting it to close so early and missed out. Kicking myself now

When you snooze... you LOOOOSE! Don't give up hope, if I was betting, I would be there will be some more FK's to come. The FK list was already WAY longer than it was supposed to be, so I figured it would have been shut down a long time ago.

Fingers crossed.
But then again, i doubt i will be as fast as people are on the sales.

I kept second guessing myself.

"Get on the list today"
"Naaah no way he will close it before the end of next week, ill get on payday tuesday"
"But, but, what if...."

Well he said he would let it go at least 40. It was coming on 80! I mean, what do you expect from the guy lol. He's a small 2 person operation that does basically everything in house except the HT, which he could do but not in this capacity. 80 on top of the all the sales he has done already? I mean this is a custom knife company, not a manufacturer who does a little finishing work on blanks and boxes them up. If he did a handful more on a few Friday sales and called it a day, I wouldn't be surprised at all. That is why there is such a rush for a Friday sale.

Edit: You pay when just before you knife ships, probably several months from the end of the list now. No need to wait for pay day. You can save up enough bottles to recycle by the time the knife will ship!

Yes i know...
And i absolutely agree with you.

I am not saying i expected more from him at all.

But then again it is frustrating to miss out, you can't expect otherwise regardless of the situation. Whether my fault, your fault, Nate's fault or no-one's fault, it is still a shame the thread had to end.

I don't think you missed out! I think it's time to get ready for the next Friday sale. If Nathan keeps up with the larger sales every 2 weeks, you have a good shot. I bet there will be a slower sale for the FK at this point compared to the EDC.

Xtian: one other ray of hope for you would be if someone backs out of the preorder list and then gives up his spot over to you, or gives you the first right of refusal when he gets his preordered FK before he releases it to the general market in case he has already acquired one or two on Fridays Sales. Of course, such a solution should still require Jo/Nathan's agreement and blessing.

Thanks Justin, you are right.
I will certainly give the FK sales a try.
I dont think anything could go as quick as the edc's haha. What was it, 15 in 15 seconds or something ridiculous?
I will watch the next sale thread so i am well prepared for it.

And thanks Casino, that is what i was thinking about too.
However i feel there could be some hassle around that and perhaps if that happened to me, others that missed out and wanted in might make a fuss about it?
That is an assumption of course. And i have no names in mind, it is literally just a general possibility haha.
But yes if it could happen somehow with ease, i sure wouldn't mind ;)

Thanksfor the advice Casino! Appreciated

Well I'll be leaving tomorrow morning, I'll be in the wilderness for 10 days. I'm taking my field knife, and my rmj Jenny wren. Also a back up skinner just in case. Hopefully I'll get some good use out of this field knife. Not sure if I'll be able to get pics, but I can give an overall impression on how it holds up in decently hard wilderness use. Hopefully it will be used skinning 2 bull elk.

Good news for arsonists!

Very nice Lorien! I was thinking about flattening the pommel just enough to put an edge but now I have some rethinking to do!

Looks like a good practical mod I'm going to have to do to my FK.
Thanks for the idea!

In my opinion it's hard to beat optimized D2 in a skinning knife application. The super fine carbides in the super steels don't work as well in a skinner. The large carbide volume fraction and large carbide in D2 continue to cut flesh even after the edge is blunt, and the vanadium and moderate chrome content make it a very good alloy for this (if HT optimize for cutlery).

You just can't hammer it through a rib cage or pry with it.

This is pretty much totally off-topic, so please do feel free to ignore, but... I've heard that Bohler 'Sleipner' steel is essentially a D2 formulation modified for toughness —*any experience/thoughts regarding Sleipner, since we're on the topic of D2?
