filson packer hat vs. tilley

Although i think Filson stuff is awesome but in the hat category i'd go with Tilley. I've been using a Tilley for about 4 years. The Tilley LT5 has gone with me on my travels around the world in jungles and cities and it always comes out nice. Since it's washable it's really easy to maintain. It has that nice secret pocket and if you are actually able to wear it out they'll replace it for you. The hat band is really useful too. On boats and windy areas it gives you confidence that it won't fly off.

I don't have the Filson Packer hat but i'm guessing it's either made with Cover cloth, tin cloth or shelter cloth. How heavy are these? With the LT versions, Tilleys are real light and very comfortable.

I just love hats. Although right now i's sticking to 2 brands. Tilley and Akubra.

If you want to have a look at more choices of hats try having a look at Noggintops

The only hat I have ever owned like this has been a Tilley. But I have owned it for perhaps 15 years, and it is as serviceable today as was when I got it. Most of our family has one of them. My niece is getting one for Christmas, for her Outward bound wilderness trips in the spring.
Really good kit, get the wide brimmed, life is easier under a Tilley.
cheers

....the over-the-top pretentious Tilley advertising strategy.....

Well, when you consider the source....! ;)

(If you ever have the chance to meet Alex Tilley, you'll understand. )

I've got a tilley... I like it... cant go wrong with them!

Just size it a touch larger than you like, gravity keeps it on nicely, best design I've seen so far!

Well, I don't talk about it much, but there was this time I was overseas doing some work for my Uncle. It was some low key work, the kind of thing you don't want to draw too much attention to, so I was over there in civillian clothing. Due to the heat of the desert sun I elected to bring my Tilley to keep the sun off my brow. So there I am, in the desert with my camera taking pictures of buildings for "archetectural studies" when a large and angry man with an AK should appear. No doubt he saw right through my cover. A sneer crossed his face as he approached. "Hey," he said "Is that a Tilley?" He decided I had excellent taste for an infidel and we became fast friends. In fact we now exchange christmas cards. Its a little known fact that the real reason that the Islamic fundalmentalists hate us is a deep seated jealosy of our superior headgear. Well, the Crusades probably didn't help much, but its mainly the hats.

The above is every bit as believable as some of their ad copy. They do seem like nice hats, but I can't get past the pretentious prick aura that the ad generates.

;)

My insecure Canadian feathers are getting ruffled... have to look up Tilley's latest ads and see what all the fuss is about. OOOpps gotta go, I have to use my Cold Steel Tanto to break up some concrete, save the orphans from terrorists and slice that silicon really thin, and damn have to dig little Jimmy out of the well again. ;)

I love Tilley hats. The only problem; the color doesn't suit me. I wear a lot of black. Okay, I wear all black and I need a good outside black hat. Tilley offers nothing like the T3-T5 in black. I own an Akubra and a very nice Bailey but neither of them are run around the woods hats. I need something machine washable, (I have Tide Black), as well as being tough as nails. Any ideas?

I don't think Tilley makes any black hats other than the winter ones. However they do have the olive drab LT5 and navy blue as well i think.

I don't mind the hype about Tilley's. They are good hats and it gives it a character. Some knife companies hype their products as well.

The main thing is that it lives up to the hype.

I think my next hat purchase would be the Akubra traveller. I think it's the first crushable akubra.

My Tilley experiences have lived up to their claims. I also find their advertising more subdued then Cold Steel for example.

Why their hats cost so much more in the USA then in Canada still puzzles me. My solution was Ebay for hats sourced in Canada. I even got a gently used T2 from a Lady in South Carolina for $20. :D

I had the oil finish tin cloth packer and still have a hemp tilley. For the purposes of protecting for the sun, I'ld go with the Tilley, even though their advertising is stupid. The packer is perhaps sturdier, but it's also hotter and heavier, rain protection is marginally better. I'd still have the packer but the dogs snatched it and shredded it before I could get to them.

For cold temps I'd go with the filson insulated ball cap with ear flaps.

The Filson packer is indestructable...just plain indestructable. The tin cloth is as waterproof as you can get.

Tilley, because it lighter and washes. I mainly use it for Summer wear. In the winter rain, I use an OR hat.

in the UK they have the LT5 in olive which i don't think is available in the us/canadian sites.

I have a Tilley T3, and LT5, and an AIRFLO Cap. I tend to wear the T3 when it's windy because I can snap up one side. The LT5 gets most of its use in warm weather. I haven't really found a practical use for the cap yet - even with the AIRFLO it is pretty hot, especially with the neck flap down.
