filson packer hat vs. tilley

I love Tilley hats. The only problem; the color doesn't suit me. I wear a lot of black. Okay, I wear all black and I need a good outside black hat. Tilley offers nothing like the T3-T5 in black. I own an Akubra and a very nice Bailey but neither of them are run around the woods hats. I need something machine washable, (I have Tide Black), as well as being tough as nails. Any ideas?

Within a week of buying my Tilley (12 years ago) I used fabric dye to change the color to a brown. Usually takes a year or two of monthly washings for the color to really disappear. It nevers returns to the Tilley original off-white but the gradual washing out of brown makes it look pretty cool.

Some things to remember:

- Buy it so you have a good thumb's space between hat and forehead, it'll shrink after washings but a good stretching on yer knee is all it needs.
- Send in that warranty when you get yer hat.
- If you see someone with a Tilley, start a Tilley conversation.
- The chin strap is your friend, especially in a topless Jeep

This is what is great about this forum. I didn't even know this stuff existed. As a result of all the information off this thread, I bought a Filson Insulated Packer today (It gets cold up here in the Northland). Thanks for all the input and recommendations.

I've wore a Tilley literally around the world, from the Artic Circle to the Equator and love it. One reason is that most people know what they look like and treat you like a harmless tourist. Another thing is, and Tilley will never advertise this, a NAA mini revolver will fit in the "secret compartment".

Hmm...

Anything with a wide brim and a cover for the ears?

Whens someone going to make a hat that keeps the sun out of your eyes and your nose warm? :D
