While grinding some titanium scales for a folder, the sparks lit some old belts on fire! When I looked up there was a pretty good fire going, no real damage, but I am going to line around my grinder with sheet metal so it doesn't happen again, be careful with this stuff!

You should put a bucket of water under your grinder when grinding titanium.

(By the way, the chips from machining titanium are flammable too! ;) )

That must have been a sight!

Nathan,
Do you grind Ti with any specially colored goggle lens? Curious, I know some makers do when sawing it for like UV reasons or something. Can anybody out there provide some info on that deal? Fumes and light and what not. Perhaps an MSDS?

actually, I would imagine that the built up dust laying inside the bottom loop on the belts probably caught fire first, igniting the belts from there.
