Depends on the you're fighting style/martial art you're most proficient in, or you could just pick one of these:
I prefer the right side middle one, that way if you're stopped by a cop you can say its just a hunting knife (obviously, that's why the stag handle) also the finger choil in the middle of the cutting edge allows you to choke up on it for those more precise jugular cuts.

If I HAD to defend myself with a fixed-blade knife (it'll never happen), I'd choose my Benchmade Nimravus. It's light, thin, pointy, and VERY sharp.

The day this occurs, is the day I don't have one of my guns near me, my mouth has been sewn shut, and my legs have been chopped off.

Also, inb4 practical tactical, utilikilts, leather dusters, every-day combat boots, and other mall ninjary.

Hey, I'm glad you asked!!! In my opinion the best fixed blade for self defense would be my custom mod'ed Kuk' "Melba Toast". 11" limb chopper...here comes the pain!!!

Im going to say any fixed blade can do serious damage. Unless blade is like half inch,even then it would do some damage.

I love that khuk of blixx's.

Anyway, pig sticker for sure. If your Gunna get some killin done, do it with the customary farm/hunting tool.

Depends. Are you going to carry this fixed blade on a regular basis? If so I'd say go for a TDI switch the clip to the lefty side, put it on your right side reversed, and then when you go to grab it, grab it in reverse grip. Then the TDI will become basically a fixed blade karambit

If you're not going to carry it, I'd say go for a knife that's proven it's worth like the Ka-Bar fighting knife

with no training at all,
pick something with just a point.
muster all your strength as you would an ice pick
omits messy cuts.
if it's turned against you,
you only need to worry about not getting stabbed....

A huge factor in a defense situation is going to be psychological. With that, I'm taking the largest, scariest looking blade that's still light and quick enough to actually use if the sight of my blade does not end the fight, which in many situations it probably would. The size of a large blade will also keep distance between you and your opponent. You want distance......I seriously doubt many of us would have the mental composure to handle a grappling fight with a knife without just flat out panicking. I would certainly want to end the fight as quickly as possible with one stab or slash.........again, big blade. With that being said, I'd go with a kukri........more specifically, a modern made lighter kukri, like an SK-5 Gurkha.

I would guess that somewhere near 100% of fights with a edged weapon end very quickly with just one slash or stab and the games over. I agree with this post. Bigger is always better. If you have no legal restrictions, a kukri is your best bet. Second to that is a large bowie knife or a long tanto.

Do you have training in any knife-based self defense? If so....use what you trained with.

If not. It doesn't matter. Any knife will be equally ineffective (or effective, if you are of that belief).

I suggest a set of grocery store steak knives. Cheap, sharp, and jagged. No big loss if you accidentally drop one down a sewer.

And for 99.9999999% percent of the time (the time you are not in knife fights), you can use them to cut steaks.

You might try posting in Practical Tactical. You will probably get an entirely different answer across the board. It may be what you are looking for! :thumbup:

That is certainly true if:

1) You can walk the streets of where you live wearing a kukri on your belt;
2) You are accosted by an agressive bad guy who is afraid of you and runs away;
3) Said bad guy isn't better armed than you.

I'd go with a spring knife to intimidate, just kidding. Navy seal's combat knife would be best for me i think. Light and sharp steel, has kind of a hook at the end. It'll pull out the internals once stabbed. Lethal

Fixed blade? Well if I cant get to any of my guns, I'll run at the bad guy screaming bloody murder while carrying my Viking sword. Best fixed blade I have.

Welcome.

That's an interesting choice. Can you show me one of these "Navy seal combat knives"...particularly one with a "hook at the end"? I'm unfamiliar with these.

Who said anything about walking the streets? The question was "best fixed blade for self defense"

2) You are accosted by an agressive bad guy who is afraid of you and runs away;

That was one of my points for using a large blade.......which I clearly mentioned.

3) Said bad guy isn't better armed than you.

So I'm better off with a small blade then? Either way you lose. Regardless of what your opponent has, your going to be best off keeping distance with a longer blade and upping your chances by a one cut or thrust ending the encounter quickly as opposed to multiple cuts or thrusts with a small blade during a high panic situation. It's the best of a bad situation.
