Folding knife opening in your pocket?

I had a cheap AO Flipper knife open up twice on me and cut me both times. It was tip down. The seam of my pocket pressed against the flipper and cause it to deploy.

I've never had a quality name brand knife do that.

I was wondering if anyone had or has known someone who's pocket knife has come open in their pocket, and if they've ever been cut because of it. I just received my new spyderco military in the mail yesterday. It's clip only allows for tip down carry, which I think is scary because it seems like if the knife opened in your pocket this would be the position where it would be most likely to cut you. I experimented shaking the knife up and down to see if I could get the knife to come out and to my dismay, I did end up being able to do it. Now I'm nervous about keeping it in my pocket.
It has happened to me twice once with a spyderco pm 2 and once with a sabenza 31.. I want back to slip joints and back locks in 50 years neither have given me stitches . sabenza gave me 14. Spyderca 9

I had a tip up zt 0452 open and cut me a little. It was in my back left pocket and was on the wrong seam. That was my fault, not the knife.

Never happened to me, but it seems to happened to many people with flipper knives, especially those advertised with smooth opening flipper.

This is why I take stub or cut hole for one hand opening over flip open. I have no idea about automatic since it is not legal in Canada.

If folding knives scare you; there's lots of fixed blades out there ..

I carry pocket knives tip up since they manufactured models with tip up option…
The only knife I had open partially the blade in my pocket was a M-tech copy of Tops CQT Magnum knife
simply because of the loose clip.
If your clip keep the knife in the corner of your pocket it (the corner material of your jeans) will not allow the blade to open, given your knife is functioning properly. In this case, even if you have to slide your thumb inside the pocket to draw the knife, if properly positioned at the corner, you thumb cannot go there. Worst case scenario, 90% of the time the blade will open slightly and will catch on the inside of your pocket when drawn.
Properly designed and functioning clip, on properly adjusted blade pivot is very important for your safety.. Fact.

Had a mini Griptilian get a coin or a key, in it, and partially opened it in my pocket. Reached in my pocket for my keys and ran the tip of my middle finger into it. Went all the way to the bone for about an inch...

I carry a Military, an older, loose one, tip down just fine. Carry my PM2s tip-up, though, my hand prefers it.
I carry different knives tip up and tip down, really depends on the knife, and have NEVER had a knife open in my pocket. Complock, backlock, linerlock, it's never come close to happening.

Also, because I like to wave, I got in the habit of carrying on the far right corner of my pocket, or far left. So, it the blade does open, it will close itself or cannot cut me. Problem solved.

"High & Tight": almost nobody will see it...

Happened twice with me with friction folders. Never again will I buy a friction folder. Never.

Years ago at work with my Benchmade 531, tip up carry. We wear uniforms where I work and the edge of the pocket had gotten frayed. I reached to draw my knife and the thumb stud hung the threads on my pocket and opened the blade (which is really easy to do with the smooth axis lock) and somehow as my knife snagged my finger contacted the blade and cut it pretty badly. Not enough to get stitches, but I bled profusely for a while. I guess tip up or tip down is a personal preference, but I can testify that it can happen. This being said, I still carry tip up knives regularly and don’t worry about it much. I am usually more concerned with how the pocket clip feels in my hand while using the knife, some of them create hot spots depending on how the clip/handle is made

Had my Benchmade Bogi 650 open up on my when I jumped from a tree stand to the ground. It was in my cargo pocket and gave me a wicked box cutter like cut behind my knee about two inches long. The bogi is now a safe queen, but I think I'll fondle her once more this afternoon.

If you play with sharp things and cannot accept the possibility of getting cut: you need a different hobby...

This whole question about getting cut by a knife in your pocket should be a non-issue...
When things go right...
Tip-up carry should put the blade against the rear seam of your pocket. As ham-fisted and clumsy as I am: it's impossible to get to the blade!
Besides: who digs THSAT deep into the pocket for the knife anyway? I grab by the clip, and about the top third of the scale...
My Spyderco Millie is tip-town and blade forward. You're still just grabbing the uppermost top portion of the scale...

If you are reaching into your pocket to fish out a set of keys: what's wrong with just going in carefully, and making sure that the blade is waiting to you to get within striking distance?
It's just a silly thing to worry about!

Go ahead: I'm flame-proof!

I've been bitten when reaching in my pocket for a tip-up folder at least 2-3 times.

I prefer tip down anyway, because it's easier for me to access with a grip to open it right away.

Never had it happen, even when carrying a non locking friction folder or two loose in my pocket.
As for "modern" knives, I don't like them or own any. I like and carry multi blade traditional slipjoints 99.999% of the time.
The backspring's only job is to keep the blade closed in your pocket, and from flopping partly closed between cuts when open.
