hi guys, i own a few automatic's, a paul chen katana, and i've made my first knife this week. i call it my tactical machete. i'll post a pic tomorrow if you guys would like to see it. i've always loved edged weapons ever since i was a kid, especially movie knives. recently i have been tossing the thought around about fabricating a wrist/forearm mounted stilletto type knife. think of wolverine from x-men, his retractable claws. obviously this is not fesible. but i have seen such weapons in various movies but i cant remember a single movie at the moment. except for highlander endgame, i just watched it yesterday. have any of you guys seen it?
if you recall the final battle between duncan and jacob kell. duncan thinks he has kell with the "unstopable" move conner taught him. but as he tries to execute it, kell blocks the blow from his katana with a dagger that shoots out from his wrist. i want to try and fabricate such a device but i dont know where to even start. any ideas?? i've started searching the web, cause im sure it has been attempted before. but i cant find the right search terms to find what im looking for. any help or ideas would be appreciated. thanks.

Ask Tony Swatton (do a google on him). He does lots of the edge needs for Hollywood.

got a lot of hits for Tony Swatton, but nothing like what im looking for has he seem to have made. can any of you guys think of other movies where these type of weapons were used?

Perhaps before your time, but see Marathon Man.(Dustin Hoffman?). The BG (Nazi, the dentist one, can't remember his name) has one and blades in his shoes also. Good Movie. He cuts a Jewish guys throat who recgonizes him from the death camps. On a busy NY street no less.

Watch it, you'll like it.

no marathon man is a classic, not before my time, well maybe a little. im 30. "is it safe....." lol. great movie. looking for a more recent movie though. it would basically be a large stiletto or slide knife. i could make it operate by gravity, like a paratroper knife, or inertia. but i would rather it work on a spring loaded mechanism.

damn I wish I could remember the name of the movie.....but i think but am not sure that liza Minelli was in it if that helps....I cant remember the movie at all seems it was old and not that popular ....but this guy in it had an extendible spike that shot out to a length of about 18 inchs.....I remember thinking it was one of the coolest things I ever saw.....he was the bad guy hit man and he stabbed a lady movie star with it ....it strapped to his forearm and was totaly invisible under his suit jacket and when he tweaked his wrist it shot out like a gun with a thud..(like nothing I had seen).......it was also dual action so no one saw who stabbbed the lady as she got in the car coz it was a quick out-in action.

I'm interested to find this thing coz its the beez kneez of bad stuff.

though I wouldnt carry something like that coz I'd get in deep s**t
I dont think I would show it to many people for that matter.

I'm gonna try and find the movie now myself.....saw it when I was a kid but if I do I'll let you know coz this thing was "SICK"

No, it's not safe. LOL I think his was spring loaded, but you better have your hand out of the way. With a gravity, how would you walk with your arms down or swinging?

You might be able to do it, but movie magic rarely translates to real world. Good luck, it sounds cool at least.

Maybe you should check into those mechanisms that hide derrangers under your sleaves. You know, the kind gamblers had way back when. Anyhoo, those are probably inertia opperated.
I don't know.
Just a place to start maybe.

Hudson Hawk. The BG Butler had some massive blades hidden up his sleeve. Totally Hollywood, but very cool.

hey wetdog1911, i just woke up so lets make sure we're on the same page. when i said "is it safe" im refering to the BG in marathon man, who keeps asking DH that question in that famous scene. not if it's safe to use this type of weapon, lol. but i assume you know that. that was a great movie. another movie that just hit me, speaking of pistols, is alien resurrection. remember the one guy from the team that brings the humans in stasis for the alien experiments. he had two pistols up his sleeves that would fly out when he wanted them. gold cutter, thats a good example. try and remember the name of the movie. i want this to stay on topic, but let me deviate one second. wetdog, i had this conversation with my girlfriend yesterday. ever notice that every movie that steven segal is in, he carrys a 1911 or variant as his primary weapon. he must be into guns and likes the 1911, cause every movie i have ever seen him in, he has one. next, i dont know where all you guys live, but im from PA and i have a concealed carry permit. i can carry a friggin 50 cal desert eagle under my shirt if i want, but it's still illegal to carry a little automatic knife. sorry about the rant, but this always seemed really stupid to me. anyway, back on topic. i have to go to work soon, but i'll be thinking about movies with this type of weapon today. if you guys think of a more current movie, post it. or even search terms to look for it. i have seen plans to build an electromagnetic rail gun on the net, i know someone has built one of these before. i just have to find it.

Gamblers used to have something called a jacob's ladder. This was a spring device that could shoot cards into your hand, which could easily be adapted to knife use. Check donrearic.com and google.

You need something that senses the position of your hand and is only released when you bend your hand out of the way. If it is on the inside of your wrist it is only released if you tip your hand backwards to present your palm forwards. This is the way most of the hidden sleeve guns worked. This requires something like a ring on your middle finger with a piece of clear fishing line running from it across your palm to the release mechanism. I really don't much like the idea.

If I did it I would slip a simple sheath over the blade that I could shake off after the blade was extended. What I would do instead is take one of your automatics and attach an elastic lanyard from the butt end and fastened above your elbow. A swing of your arm will slide the automatic into your hand. When you are done with the knife you close it and just open your hand. It will dissapear back up your sleeve. It's an old magician's trick.

this thing I saw was on the back of your wrist.....when the video shops open in a few hours I'm gonna get some of the staff to adimately look for the flick..... thats gonna be a few hours but I'm on to this so stay posted.

Do a search for Axls (Axles?) Armory. He makes something similar to what you're talking about, I think.

I found the one in "The Man Who Knew Too Little" to be amusing. I think that one was on the little-finger side of the forearm. Along the line of the ulna bone.

I've been looking with my browser and havent found anything that resembles what I saw but I did learn that you can buy something similar in a manga cartoon for $30,000 ....made me laugh

I'm tired now its late so I'll try tomorro

wow, thanks for all the interest in my idea. the automatics i have are all side opening, no stilettos. so i cant modify one of those. the lanyard magician trick is a good idea and i may try it one of these days. but i thinking more along the lines of a large blade, double edged, about 6-8in in length. my main problem right now is finding any kind of information on the design aspect. i've tried almost every search term in google, to no avail. movie, blade, hidden, retractable, etc. no luck. the only thing i have seen that even comes close to this is on the avp site(alien vs predator) there is a behind the scenes clip on the making of some of the fx, and they show how they built the predators retractable "claws". it works on a lever type design, but these are only for close ups of the claws. it's a rather large setup. it's killing me cause i know i've seen these type of weapons in so many movies, but none come to mind right now except highlander endgame.
any highlander fans here? as i said in my first post. remember the move that conner teaches duncan a few hundered years ago, when they are fencing? conner tells him, "properly executed, this move is unstoppable" they end up with swords locked together, duncan thinking he has the upper hand. then with some fancy footwork and pivoting, conner flips him aside and has a clear shot at his neck.
the move is used again when conner and duncan fight, and one more time when duncan faces jacob kell at the end of the movie. duncan has kell locked up in this move but when he executes it, kell has a dagger that is mounted on the outside of his wrist that shoots out and blocks his strike. this is the only movie fresh in my mind. anyway, keep the good ideas flowing.

wesp666, thanks for the link. i actually stumbled upon it last night, but was too tired to read the whole thing. but there may be a start here. http://donrearic.com/covertweapons.html . here's an excerpt.

"There were some extreme examples of covert weapons/edged escape tools as well. Just a few of examples...
In the world of the Cheating Gambler, there is a device known as a, "Jacob’s Ladder." This was a spring-loaded or otherwise activated, folding [accordion] type of extension that could be hidden up a sleeve so with very little [trained] movement, a Cheat could push a hidden card into his palm during a card game.
The British SOE took this idea and constructed a leather, strap on gauntlet that could be concealed by a sleeve but in the end, the design was too bulky. Instead of pushing a card into the hand of an SOE Operative, it extended a five inch blade, similar to a double edged Lapel Dagger for immediate use. This device appears on Page 31 of Keith Melton’s excellent book, "Clandestine Warfare.""

jdavey, i did a search for axls/axels/axles armory, but no results. are you sure that is the right spelling?
