Hey Everybody,

Haven't posted here in a while, so I figured I would throw this up. Here I am forging two paring knives; a tourne and a drop point. This is start to finish, no cuts. It's pretty much the progression that I use for most of my blades, just scaled up or down.

Thanks for watching,

Nick

Nick- Good to see you here!
As usual, great work.
I need a paring knife, btw.

Nick what is that loop around the horn of your anvil for?

Thanks for the video! I am learning as much as I can from it.

Thought so!

Also, one other question: I saw that when you cut the bar, you went from all 4 sides as opposed to just one side. Does this just make for a cleaner cut?

Yes Don,

It makes for a cleaner, truer cut and conveniently knocks the corners back on the two cut pieces. It makes it even easier to avoid the dreaded "fishmouth" when you forge the next one out.

Hey Barry,

I just call them "side grab" tongs. Just something I made up for forging 1/8-1/4 x 3/4-1" stock. I'm not really in the tong business, but most suppliers should have something similar.

Cheers,

Nick

Very interesting video. Thank you for taking the time to post it here.

Really cool video Nick, thanks for sharing! :)

I love that squatty cut-off hardie.

Hope this doesn't come off as a thread derailment... I think it couples well with your video---

Barry- I have a couple sets of those from different sources. Grant Sarver (OCP) and Tom Clark--- sadly both smiths have passed away, but their tongs are still being made.

I use them all... but I do prefer the fact that Grant's tongs are forged from 1045 so they're springy and you can quench them when they get too hot. The Tom tongs are a funky spring/tool type steel that is much more likely to break--- IME, but are still great tongs.

This looks like a video I just watched in a certain knives thread on a certain Subaru forum... :D

Great video, hoss. It's always fun to watch someone that's good with a hammer.

I was wondering if that thing around your horn was a mute or some kind of hold-fast that I hadn't seen before. I had a super-loud anvil, but was able to shut it up deader-than-dead by putting a bit of silicone caulk between it and the base. Before that, I was using magnets on the horn and heel, but they only killed the noise to about the level of yours. I never thought about a mute like yours, though; sure would be cleaner than magnets! Neat.

Thanks Man,

Yup, that's a ring arresting ring. Does a great job on those cast steel anvils. Thanks again for the kind words.
