Frankenstein Grips & Users Let’s see them

Today is one of those days that I had planned on doing a bunch of yard work. I had picked out my user grip (REI grip with a 20CV blade). Then the rain decided to poor all day and I was not in the mood to put on my rain gear. So one thing lead to another and it became knife maintenance and mod day. Years ago I picked up a Camp Perry grip with a D2 blade. I really liked the knife but the huge logo on the side of the blade always bugged me. So today I swapped the blade with a 20CV blade from a 551-1. I then went through my knife parts drawer in the garage and found some old Armanis gray G10 scales with a black geared G10 backspacer. I took the guts from the 551-1, the D2 blade, and a cast off beaver tail clip and assembled the parts in the gray scales. I think I am pretty happy with the way it all turned out.

So, let’s see your user and/or your Frankenstein grips.

Number 3 & 4 are just gorgeous. Number 2 makes me smile. It is just great to see one get used like that. Number 1, is awesome with the micarta scales. ChazzyP would be proud to see that one.

JonesE JonesE Those Armanis scales are nice. You ought to pick up a s30v Ritter and do a blade
swap. You could sell the Camp Perry blade with the Ritter scales and make back 60% or so on
the cost of the Ritter. It would be sweet in those Armanis scales.

Bought the M2 first in 07 and worked with it a few years. The M4 was a blade swap
with a gold class M4 in 09. The M390 is wearing Flytanium cf I think those came out in 12.
I got the S30V last and the micarta scales are Igorded.

Thanks grybsh7, I have had these scales laying in my parts drawer for 3 or 4 years now. I just checked and 552 that are listed on the bay at between $400 and $600. I think I would have to sell a kidney to afford one. I was really into Spyderco’s when the Ritter grips were discontinued. I totally missed the boat on that one. I love your collection. I hope they see plenty of pocket time.

Thanks for the compliments I've been a Grip fan for a long time.
Set up a search on the bay for Ritter Grips. Auctions for S30V Ritters have been ending
a little over $230. If you could catch one here on the exchange maybe a little cheaper.

Impressive lineage on your knives. I have had numerous 154CM grips over the years. Once I swapped one over into AWT green anodized aluminum grips when he first started. They were pretty awesome. I gifted that knife to a friend on his birthday. It still sees regular use. The Igorded scales are awesome. I swapped the REI S30V blade into the plain micarta. It’s my garage knife. It is super comfortable and the grip improves when the scales get wet.

I like the micarta. I've switched scales on all mine a few times:D.

Your M390 Ritter grip is sweet in the REi grip scales. The green and black G10 is just awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Hey grybsh7, Last night your pick of your M2 Ritter grip had me scratching my head. The scales looked familiar. So, I went into my knife drawer and pulled out my 551Bk-1301. This is the 2013 shot show knife. Mine hasn’t seen much use since it is a coated blade and serial 250/750. But you can see the scales are similar to yours with the horizontal milling. The Camp Perry knife has the vertical milling and the scales are blue and black.

Here is a quick pic of the 551BK-1301 shot show knife and my Camp Perry knife with 20CV blade for reference.

These were in my rotation storage and easy to access.

There are a few drop points and sheepfoots (mini and full size) in the safe as well with a variety of Wilkins, Cuscadi and Death of all Things scales.

Thanks for sharing psquared, Another great Ritter grip collection. Really digging the Wilkins Mini Ritter.

These ritter grip pics make miss my small m390 ritter with swimming pool green wilkins g10 grips. It was a heck of a knife. Never be able to get that back now.

JonesE JonesE you’re correct. Too many years since I had those.
I think I gave those along with a set of AWT scales to my son in-law.

P psquared Your mini Ritter in the Wilkins is nice.
I have a mini Ritter in Knivesshipfree g-10 scales, the minis
are just a little small for my mitts.

Some more customised Grips seeing the safe was open ... I seem to have been heavily invested in Grips.

Smooth G10 all by Death of all Things, 2 G10 Wilkins and the G10 with "Anso" grooves is Cuscadi

Thanks for sharing psquared, Quite the impressive collection. I really like the tasteful customization you have done to each of your knives. The Wilkins G10 scales look awesome and the DOAT scales look so comfortable. I bet they are a joy to use.

On the minis the Wilkins and DOAT scales are great. The Wilkins scales seem to give just a little bit more purchase for the pinky. Both give the mini a little bit more refinement.

On the full size I find the Wilkins scales too big and blocky (small hands) and the DOAT scales are heavy. On the full size, the carbon fibre Gold Grip scales are fantastic. My second choice on the full size Grips, strange as it may sound, would be the stock “clacky” scales. This size knife I generally regard just as a tool rather than part tool, part pocket jewellery that I regard my smaller knives as. Purely functional plastic scales are fine for this. When I want a bit of flair / pride of ownership as well as cutting ability in a knife this size, I’ve got the carbon scales ... quite possibly the nicest carbon fibre scales I’ve seen come out of the Benchmade factory.
