French Grey finish?

Has anybody tried this finish? Sounds basically like etching a blade.
I would like to try it but the only directions I got was to dip the blade in phosphoric acid. Any idea as to how long, what finish prior to dipping, and what concentration of acid(straight acid, 50/50 mix etc.)?
 
Never realy cared for it outside of gun parts, The way I've done it a couple of time is to etch in a 4 or 5 to 1 mix of water and ferric cloride for 10 minits or so. I then spray down with windex and wash with hot soapy water and bakeing soda. Maybe a rubdown with Flitz, but no buffing. Comes out nice and light grayish' satiny texture.

Sure there's a better way, but this works for me
