From Cattle Knife to Stockman!

Awesome knives all around. I think this pattern is so interesting. I recently scored a GEC #82 Dixie Stock Knife in Indian Paint Brush Jigged Bone (which I had and stupidly sold) and I think it is a great continuation of the evolution. I think the slim clip, wharncliffe, and drop point blades are improvements (for my uses) and are fit expertly into the slim but long frame.

I probably should have waited to post till I had it and could post pictures, but I'll post some when I get it hopefully.

Didn’t know that Charlie, or even consider accsess! Very good “points”. I don’t think I have seen one placed elsewhere, but if I do I’ll put it in here.
Thanks, Neal

Just read this entire thread and Charlie thanks for posting it I've enjoyed it thoroughly. I wanted to post a picture of this Case stockman Glennbad recovered in stag for me.

Glad you enjoyed it, Randy!! Wow, 6 pages already!
Time flies!!
Nice work by Glennbad!
One of my BF friends sent me some of Glenn's Stag work!!;):D
Thanks again!!

Here is a branch of the Stockman evolution, an older Henry Sears. The interesting features are most obviously the Stag handles and slant, pinched bolsters, indicating a deluxe knife. And the Punch, which looks like a Utica style, is a locking punch! You squeeze the main blade to release it! A catch bit allows the Main blade to share space with the Spey secondary, leaving the punch on its own spring. All blades are stamped, typical of old generation knives!

Wonderful stag covers on that one. Thanks for sharing.

The extra tool puts the knife in the "utility knife/utility Jack" category, Postlapsaria.
I am not sure it has a specific name. Anyone else??
I am waiting for a Stockman person to comment on that Henry Sears!!:)
A rare configuration, a few posts up^^^!

Neat stock knife, Charlie. I've collected a few electrician knives with a similar unlocking mechanism but I hadn't previously seen it on a stock knife. There's a rare Remington stock knife with a punch that unlocks with a button (same mechanism as their radio knife). Henry Sears made some unusual patterns... a lot of the knives in the Henry Sears catalog reprint would fit right in my "stranger things" topic!

waynorth waynorth -Charlie! A second way(aside from a copper liner lock) to lock the punch open! Tremendous! That makes two so far... Those HJs are simply beautiful too, but no surprise there:rolleyes:;):D
Thanks, Neal

I forgot to post my remarks earlier! And now Jake reminds me there’s a third known locking mechanism for awls. Typical:D
Thanks, Neal

Neal, there is a fourth, and probably more of them! Locking a punch open is desirable for safety, and many ways to do so have undoubtedly been tried!
On this NYK, the springy tab pops up into a step, cut under the bolster. You push the tab toward the punch to close it!
This is quite a tangent. I will post more later in "Magnificent HJs".
Let's get back to Stockmen!!

I used this scan from a Henry Sears catalog for another discussion but the knife shown on the right (No 3361) is very unusual. The handle is a Wharncliffe shape. I think it counts as a stock knife... a very unusual stock knife.

Here's a Wharncliffe handle for comparison.

Charlie's locking stock knife definitely steals the show. But on the topic of locking stock knives, this relatively modern Camillus is a neat example. The lock release for the clip blade looks like a 1980s style power switch and makes me laugh. Nice knife to use though.

A couple of odd stock knives...the one on the top has two clip blades and the one on the bottom has a punch instead of a clip blade! By the definition in LG4, the last one wouldn't count as a stock knife since it doesn't have a clip blade.

I don't know what you are talking about, Charlie :D The newer version has a retina touch screen with finger print unlocking clip blade, 20 mega pixel camera, and cellular service. :eek:o_O:rolleyes:

Oh:eek: ; well then . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :D

Lol - love the banter guys.

Funny - I was just taking another look at that Henry Sears - admittedly I wanted to go Wow etc - when it was posted- but I am afraid that I always do that- then I see Charlie you mentioned no one had made noise bout it- well I can tell you I did when viewing that amazing Knife......

It’s been mentioned fairly recently that one particular Knife was a collection all on its own- this Knife would just HAVE to fall into that this category ...... Such beautiful old Stag and the Knife is most certainly a premier Stockman if ever there was one.

The following Ebony Utica’s are breathtaking!

Jake - I need such a Knife with all those mod cons - you just let me know when that’s up for grabs - ginger print unlock- yup - no one will be able to use my Knife - ever! :D
