Yes, it's a painting. The original was done by G.A Embleton of Peiwar Kotal of the 5th Goorkha Regiment during the 2nd Afghan War in 1879.I think the original is at the National Army Museum rather than the Gurkha Museum. The whole painting is quite a bit larger showing more of the "action".
