Good versions of the Ray Mears Woodlore knife.

I have a Wright & Sons, and I would consider the Marsh that Riddleofsteel has a woodslore design as well. They carve wonderfully, My Wright is much easier to use than my Aurora..The blade is the same thickness as an Aurora, it just looks thick becuase the blade is about .5" shorter.
I dont think it has Magic powers...I dont think I would worry about carrying my Aurora, most of you guys know how much I love that thing, its just that I LIKE the woodslore design and shape. The Koster is very close, its a bit slim in my hand, but overall, one of the best bangs for your buck out there..I get to a point that I realize that I am splitting hairs. Every knife I own is a good survival and bushcraft blade IMO..if they werent, they wouldnt be in my collection...I dont collect any other kind of blade...other than the few choppers that I have.
Honestly, the best knives in my hand after about an hour or so of carving is my WoodJewels...they are easy on the eyes and hands. Light and sharp, great knives and they are affordable as well. Gene

Nothing wrong with that.

Again, not exactly what you describe but this one has won my heart for woodworking. It has a .093" O1 blade with GCM scales. It handles excellently. The Scandi grind is probably higher than one would typically want but I requested it this way. Kaled Reynolds (Muskrat Man) made this for me for what I consider a ridiculously low sum. The handle is definitely not slim but it fits, is comfortable in any hold and is well balanced. I wish I had a better pic of the handle, as it is the most comfortable one I own.

I believe Dan Koster will leave the scales "fat" or unshaped for you if you ask, since that one seems "close" to you. If you are at all handy, you could shaoe the handle to your liking.

I have been looking at the Muskrat man ones for a while now..I would have already bougth one..( it looks awesome) but I am still holding my breath for my 2 Skookums. They should be here sometime around Jan 2008.....Oh...hey wait am minute???

I recently received my Muskrat Man bushcrafter - it's identical to the one above (except slight differences in the grind) - I had ordered one made from 1/8" stock (I'm pretty sure is L6 tool steel), but what I received was 3/32" in thickness - Kaleb explained that the material gets thinned down considerably when the scale is polished off (I wanted clean flats).

I was apprehensive as to how well the thin blade would work for bushcraft type tasks, and contemplated returning it. What sold me was the handle - it has the most comfortable handle I have ever held. So, I decided to go out & play with it. It handled carving tasks easily, and after batoning some 2-3" diameter seasoned maple, I could discern no damage to the blade. It was still hair-shaving sharp, and there were no nicks or rolls to the edge. It's a keeper. The leather sheath that came with the knife was also well made.

It was a bargain at under $130, with about a 2 month wait time. He was easy to communicate with, and sent pictures when it was ready. I'd definitely order another knife from Kaleb (He did say he was thinking of a smaller version of the Bushcrafter & Pukko - I'm very interested to see how they turn out).

YOu guys are ruining it for the rest of us...his wait time is going to grow and grow!!!

Muskrat Man makes a great knife.

Most makers won't copy a blade design. Even though everything's been done, and there is really no way Mr. Mears could come after you, its probably not going to happen. I know I won't copy one. If I was willing to do so I'd have copied a Game Warden months ago. I never have any knives out around me when I'm drawing up a knife. If it turns out the knife is similar to another, its just because knives are never unique. Not because I copied someone.

Use of the WOODLORE name will bring a letter from Mr Mears barrister. The design of the knife is somewhat more subjective and MANY people do it.
