a good axe is perhaps the most important tool any man can own, most would agree that GB makes some of the finest in the world. I own both SWA's by GB, they are amazing. for a cheaper alternative look at http://www.wetterlings.com/, also Swedish quality, but cheaper.
OP-look at the GB hunter's axe too, it fills the gaps between a hatchet and a small axe.
The wildlife hatchet is so small, a large survival knife is just as effective, and safer than any axe for the average newbie. Remember, the smaller the axe, the more likely you are to hit yourself when you make a mistake.
