Griptillian Regrind....

That is very nice looking! Hey, Tom, do you make the TK-3 in any steel other than D2?

Yes!

I use CPM S30V, CPM-154, CPM 3V, CPM M4, Talonite, A-2, 0-1, W-2, 1095 with clay temper, and damasteel.

Take your pick. If you would like something other than that just let me know.

Tom

Any input on this...

If the steels were heat treated optimally then the order of ability to take a fine edge goes :

SPGS -> S30V -> ZDP-189

They should all be fairly close, but the heat treatment is so wild among the knives it is impossible to tell what will happen. I used my Sebenza with a grind much thicker than the U2 and it literally exploded.

The problem is that these knives (S30V) coming in spec'ed at 59/60 are hitting as low as 55 HRC so the structure has to be massively varied. You have to expect significant variation in the ability to take profiles based on that kind of range.

Use the ones I gave you as test pieces to set lower bounds. From them you can move up to more sensible estimates for your pieces. Note you can always have them thinned more later, you can never add steel back to them once it is removed.

After talking with Tom Krein and listening to Cliff I will just have Tom grind the hollow back into my knives and get the edges in the .010" or slightly under range, and have him thin Cliff's Jess Horn as close to the U2 as possible, and hope it will work. I think it will. On my knives I just need the hollow put back into them, as they are basically saber/flat ground now and are a pain in the ass to remove the microbevel because I have to hone so much steel. I miss my hollow grinds! Plus, Tom's work on the U2 has my sense of cutting ability permanently warped. The knives should go out Friday, or Saturday at the latest.

Also, I really want one of Tom's TK-7's (hell, I actually like most all of his knives), and he says I can get it at 61 RC (D2), and I'm like "wow, that would be a great skinner". Then he lists all of these other wonderful steels as choices. Now I really have to do some research and save some money.

Here is a Griptillian that I just finished up for a fellow forumite!

This started out as flat ground all black Doug Ritter Griptillian. I was asked to thin the blade out and hollow grind it.

It mics between .010 and .011 just slightly behind the cutting edge. I did a slight swedge the full length of the clip just for asthetics. I think it turned out pretty good!!

What do you think??

Tom,
Your the man :D How dare you torture us with work like that. All your going to do now is make me droll over that. LOL

That blade will be a great slicer. That edge thickness is super, you don't get that on most knives.
I tried regrinding a 440C Grip, it didn't turn out nearly as nice as yours .
Great work.

I'm sending off my Native to get it hollowed back out with the hollow raised some and slightly thinned (hoping for the edge to be maybe slightly under .010", which it may be at now already since it is flat to the stone sharpened) and Cliff's Jess Horn and Meadowlark hoping for an edge similar in geometry to the Fallkniven U2, which I sent as a reference (quite a bit thinner than the Native), as I am hoping to test them head to head at very similar geometries. If the edges can't handle it, so be it, but I think they can and will pay up regardless. After I see how Cliff's knives perform I can send mine back out to get thinned out if they look like they can take it. Anyway, off to the post office.

P.S. Thanks for doing this Tom, and for taking the time to talk to me yesterday. I really appreciate it, and I really appreciate your grinding skills. I'll call you in a few days, and I left notes, my e mail address, and my phone number if you have any questions about what I want.

Mike,
Good talking with you on the phone! I will let you know when your blades arrive! These should be fun!

They went out priority Friday, so sometime early next week they should be in for you to do your magic. I also sent an e mail and left notes in the package. Call me with any questions or issues. You really got me drooling over your knives now that I've seen your sight, and the fact that you work with so many steels is real nice, too. Now I just need to hit the lottery so I can buy them all!

got it, the pics don't do it justice. To look at it in the cross section, and to have to squint to make out the blade... I can't believe this knife has an edge nearly 3 times as thick as Cliff's U2, that's craziness. And it's so thin, so far up the grind. Tom is going to be so swamped by others, but I have a zdp Caly coming, and I already have plans to change the profile of a small JYD blade and handle when they come out, and that 13C26 blade this thin would be so sweet...

Tom's grinds are incredible, and your knife looks great with that grind. When you start to cut and sharpen your blade is when you'll really see the full effect of a Krein grind. Tom turned my blades around the day after he got them (because I didn't get back to him the same day when he had a couple questions for me), and he was real helpful and cool to me on the phone. He said the Native came out with an edge in the .007-.008" range, and the Meadowlark and Jess Horn are at <.005", so I am going to be really in precision cutting heaven when I get them back. I can't recommend his work enough, and I have more knives that I need to send off to him for his magic to be worked on them, not to mention I would love a couple of his knives like the TK-4 & TK-7.

Hardheart,
I am glad to see that you got it back and are happy with it!!

Just let me know on the others. I promise they will be quicker! I have every possable size of Torx bits now!!:D

Got mine today. They all look and cut great. Tom rounded off the sharp edges on the choil of my Native so it is much more comfortable in the hand, brought the tip down on the Meadowlark (it was poking out from the handle) and did a great job. The U2 is still the thinnest fue to the factory blade profile, but all are damn thin, and the Byrd and Jess Horn are a sight to see, being ultra thin. The Krein Jess Horn makes my flat to the stone Jess Horn look like an axe in comparison it is so thin, and the Byrd is even thinner than the Jess Horn (less saber & swedge grinds to deal with is probably why it's slightly thinner). It is impressive to look straight down on the edge and see how thin it is and how even Tom's grinds are. I'll try to post pics later in another thread.

Mike

Mr. Krein, I was wondering if you would mind me giving you a call. I have a ZDP Leek that I'm hoping you'll be able to thin out for me.

Thanks,
Lucky Bob

For those curious, Krein does actually make knives not just regrind them :

Yes, he makes a lot of really nice knives. At the top of my Krein want list is an Ultimate Caper right now, a nice, small, thin knife with a very pointy tip.

Mike

Edit to add: I want it in M4! After talking to Tom this morning I think that would be a great steel for that knife.
