Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Great to see you here Dylan, hope everything is going OK for you buddy :) Nice to see your Hartshead Barlow :)

You work fast c-mac c-mac ! Well done  Does it pinch open OK?

Nice  Those are good slips, and fit just right :)

Thank you Vince, hope you're enjoying your Saturday my friend :)

That's a relief! :) I have been meaning to get a new printer and scanner for ages, and a new fridge/freezer, but even online, they are boring things to shop for  ;)

Looking good John

Great-looking flock there  Nice pic :)

That rings the bell for me Ed

Tasty-looking sausage sandwich and Lambsfoot pic my friend :)

Yep, definitely better without the EO notch  I've seen a few modded nail-nicks, which have looked messy. When they add them in Sheffield, it takes a second, as it's done by hand. They have a special tool to make the nick, and just bang it with a hammer. However, that's before the steel has been hardened, big difference

Hope they pay well for the overtime Kevin ;) Nice to see your Rosewood Hartshead Barlow :)

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I had a pleasant trip over to York. It has been a dull day, but wasn't raining at least, and there were a few sunny intervals.

Having had coffee before leaving home, and on the way there...

We decided to stop off for a pot of tea. We were rather amused by this fancy tea-set, but it belied a foul crime, the worst cup of tea I've had in my entire life! o_O

The cake was good...

But after the rotten tea, I really needed something decent to drink. Fortunately, one of my favourite pubs was just across the road, The Blue Bell :)

After a pint of Brew York brewery's Session IPA, which is brewed 100 yards down the road, and a pint of Brass Castle 'Bad Kitty' (vanilla porter), brewed a few miles away, I felt a whole lot better :)
I’m leaning more away from trying to add a nail nick due to how pinchable it is. Also, I’m not sure I’m skill enough to pull it off. At least not yet. For now it will stay nick free.

No TV, No kids. Sounds like heaven. :D I mean, I like kids, but my neighborhood seems to be filling up with young families, and I understand when you have young kids, it's ideal to go somewhere with outdoor seating so they can move around and make noise. The problem is I can't go out to a beer garden or Happy Hour on the patio kind of place without feeling like I'm the one in the wrong. Drinking my tequila in the middle of a playground. I kinda miss when smoking was allowed. Not because I smoked, but there were always fewer children seated in the smoking section.
How could such a nice walk

What a lovely picture of lovely woodgrain.:thumbsup:

Sunny Saturday in my comfy chair, dog on lap, rereading Dune.

Sounds great :) I don't think I've read Dune since 1980, but a quote from the first novel ("...may his name live in infamy forever.") popped into my head just yesterday :D

Thank you, Jack. All is well over here, just busy as usual. Nice pics of your outing today, shame about the bad tea. A good whisky ought to fix that ;).

I've got the Hartshead closeby again today.

That's good to hear Dylan :) Thank you, that tea was awful, it was in quite a fancy cafe too o_O Good to see you enjoying your Hartshead my friend, and a fine whiskey and smoke of course ;) :)

I didn't much like having to open yet another online account in order to set it up, but such is life nowadays. And it does work; the old one had ceased to.

What a nightmare! I hate that stuff too  I hope I'm not going to set up a new online account when I buy a new freezer  o_O ;)

Happy cocktail hour Guardians.

My de-hawksbill lambsfoot has a series of dimples instead of a nail nick because of he difficulty of cutting a nail nick with a dremel.

I've seen a few nicks, that had been put in with Dremels, which looked absolutely terrible. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valour ;)

Yeah, great place, you'd love it mate, the beer is always good too, and they have pork pies on the bar too :)

(I don't know if any of you folks are affected, but over here, a small, but increasing number of businesses won't take cash! o_O May their names live in infamy forever!!!)

I like kids too, but I think pubs are an adult environment, and where there are potential dangers, to toddlers crawling across the floor for example. I like family rooms, where people can take their kids to eat and socialise, and separate play areas outside, but some pubs here are overrun with kids, running about screaming, while their parents get drunk. I saw one mother with a young child, crawling across the floor of a pub on her hands and knees, she was so drunk, a couple of years back  If I take kids to the pub, I always tell them they're going to a grown-up place, where certain standards of behaviour are expected - sit down and enjoy your drink, no running around, no shouting and screaming, and no climbing on the tables, otherwise we'll all get thrown out!

Snappy knife, needed some pocket time! Happy Saturday Guardians!

Hope you had a nice evening Mr Pink

Good morning Guardians, hope everyone is having a lovely weekend :) It's been raining here since late afternoon yesterday, but I have a chore list as long as Meadowlark Lemon's arms, so I'll be in the house all day. Hoping I can spend some time hanging out here of course ;) Have a great Sunday folks

Good morning, Jack. Hope you have fun "puttering" around the house today.

Good Morning Guardians
I'm forced to post from my phone this morning. I wish I could reply to more of you but quoting takes much effort on my phone. I'm spending the morning in the Emergency Room with my Mom. She fell and bumped her head last night. She is fine and headed home soon. I'll try to post a picture later.

Thanks John, sorry to hear about your Mom, I'm glad she's going to be OK. Please give her all our best wishes :)

You could try a one arm man style notch if necessary just enough to get a fingernail into .just don't heat up the steel too much rename her the Frankenstein lambfoot

I've seen a few nicks, that had been put in with Dremels, which looked absolutely terrible. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valour ;)

As I recall, it didn't even need a nail-nick because it was pinchable. I must have thought it looked funny without one. Funnier now, of course. It will turn up someday and I'll leave it alone.

....
Good morning to you too Mark, it's great to see you here, and what a fantastic job you've done of that Lambsfoot  Nice work, and those are superb pics :) Is the ebony darker than it was? That was a very helpful post by Eric, and I'm glad it worked for you

Some months back, I picked up some knives I had ordered from Wright's some time before. There were 10 Big 'Uns and 10 standard, all with ebony, and with polished blades and etches. Half the Big 'Uns had off-centre blades, and all of the standard ones. A number also had tips that sat outside the frame, and the ebony on many of them was disappointing. I picked up two other knives, which looked like they'd been sharpened by a bloke they'd dragged in off the street, along with a Barlow which only had one bolster stamp. Wright's were a cutler down at the time, but all those knives had supposedly been checked o_O

Thanks, Jack for the very nice compliments. Yes, I think the Ebony looks darker after some sanding and a polish. It looks and feels absolutely luscious now, it's very dense with almost no pores and I think it's just beautiful. As easy as it was to fix the centering makes me wonder why they heck they wouldn't take the time to make sure they all left the factory that way. Both knives have a bit less snap and lighter spring than your Ironwood SFO but are still firm enough and very satisfying (after a good flushing out of the joint). It's worth noting that the Ironwood's blade polish is better and etch is darker as well.
The Big-un is up next as soon as I get the time to work on it.;) Thank you again, sir!

Nice work! Looks great.

Very nice work on those ebony lambs Mark and Rachel :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Nice find :)

Thanks very much Bill and Dan.:thumbsup:

I'm off to the City of York tomorrow, hoping the weather stays fine :) Guess what I'll be carrying, well it is Stag Saturday ;) Have a great weekend Guardians

Excellent photo Jack!:cool::thumbsup:

Been a bit absent as of late, having to deal with things on the home and family front.

I hope everyone is having a good 2020 so far. In the likely absence of further Lambsfoot SFOs (on both sides of the pond), I am resolved to carry one of Jack's finest more throughout the year. 2019 will surely be remembered with great fondness as the "Year of the Lambsfoot".

Great photo of a very handsome knife Dylan!:thumbsup:

Congratulation, Mark on the new Ebony Lamb, made even nicer by your spa refinements.

@mitch4ging - great looking kit.

Jack Black Jack Black - Great story from the sellers stall. What was his reaction to you purchasing the Dremel? The Stan Shaw book looks delightful. Awsome York Tour.

I'm glad you're pleased with it after all your careful work Mark :) It's supposed to be musical-grade ebony from a bagpipe maker Mark. I was told it would be jet-black, but was disappointed with the wood on most of the knives. I dare say it will darken with use and/or the application of some oil though. Blade-centring is something I have always insisted upon with Wright's, and as you say, it's very easy to get right, or to correct if necessary, the sort of task an experienced cutler could probably do in a minute. The mistake I made with these was accepting they had already been thoroughly checked when I picked them up from the factory, having thought I'd built up that sort of trust, as I think I had with the previous administration, but in that regard QC is the least of it :( It's good to hear your observations and thoughts on it Mark, and that's a great pic :) Have a fantastic Sunday my friend

Thought I’d do a photo of my whole flock together this morning. I’m hoping to add one in stag in the future. Maybe track down a Hartshead Barlow on the secondary market if I’m lucky.

c-mac c-mac Great job on your 93 mod! Curious why you picked the Wright blade profile for the template and not your WCLF? Also, there are some you tubes where a craftsman is putting a nail nick on his blade with a dressed angle grinder cut off wheel chucked in his drill press. The blade was held in a jig that he carefully slid into the rotating wheel. The result looked factory.

I don't know why I don't have a photo of a nail-nick being applied with the punch used for that purpose in Sheffield. I imagine that one of the numerous online videos of Sheffield pocketknives being made will include it, it only takes a second, so is easily missed.

Here's artist and sometime cutler Grace Horne applying one, which I guess is how you might add it with a Dremel, but I have to say, it looks a bit of a mess to me, as well as not being in the least bit traditional to Sheffield, where she has her studio.
