Headingley was once the centre of Yorkshire's old
Skyrack Wapentake, part of the old Viking system of government. The name is commemorated by the next pub we visited, which has been rather ruined inside unfortunately, having been knocked out, and extended to accommodate the vast numbers of students who congregate to drink here during term-time weekends.
The name 'Skyrack' is thought to relate to an ancient oak tree, which stood here for centuries, and which also gives it's name to the pub across the road,
The Original Oak.
These pubs are about halfway along Leeds' most famous pub crawl,
The Otley Run, which is best avoided. It tends to be an initiation for students, who do it in fancy dress, and hundreds of them do it every weekend. It's long, and it gets messy. We did encounter some young people who had come over from York to do it...
The Original Oak has also been pretty much ruined as a pub

We headed up the hill to the next pub along, owned by one of England's big pub chains. The building was formerly a girls grammar school, and while the interior is impressive, it is not in fact much like how the building was inside. That's Al at the bar, in the green jacket, in the first photo below
Al was hungry, so we walked on to the next bar,
Hyde Park Book Club, for another pint, and a tasty burger
I suggested a few beers in town, but Al had to get up at 6.30am, so we called it a night. For some though, the night was still young!
