Gunting Knives......pointless????

Hey - The question about the bevel probably IS irrelavent to the Gunting, but its just a question that I had. I figured I could just go ahead and ask a few questions at once instead of starting 5 other threads all at once, thats all. But I'm surprised that no one yet knows what a bevel is for sure. I was reading about Blades and shapes and stuff and it talked about some blades having "The Primary-Bevel Edge" and having a secondary edge bevel, but I don't understand what those terms mean exactly. So, if anybody knows anythign at all about what thats talking about, it sure would give me some kind of clue. Thanks

Wow..thanks Wayne...
very cool...
I'll check it out later..

Cow Girl Kate..
Keep asking questions and hopefully we can get them answered..ROFL..

thanks to you all...

Bram

I checked out the page on bevels and I now have some idea about them. I think it has something to do with the depth of the angle of the blade. I think the deeper the bevel, the more flexibility the knife has??

The bevel is just the angle of the edge. The steeper the angle the wider the edge. A thin sharp edge being good for slicing, and a wider edge is ideal for heavy chopping. Think of the difference between a Axe and a kitchen knife.

I have a glock. Its as pretty as Bram and the gunting are. That does not mean its not effective, its just that you could confuse the 3 of them.

:D

Ok..I admit it..I'm old..not pretty and I do very simple things..sooooo
me, the GLOCK and the GUNTING are all in the same company..except they both work really well..are indestructo...and definately follow form and function rules....ROFL...

I never thought the Gunting was beautiful until I went to a seminar and learned how to use it. I still think it's a strange lookin' critter, but WOW is it fun to work with!

cowgirlkate: keep asking.....
A few basic thoughts about knife technique in the modern world.

A) Most (not all) modern knife training is based on Filipino martial arts or military systems.
B) You don't have to take a martial art to learn knife technique.
C) Knives as defense tools are not as well understood as guns, even by many police officers. Make sure you know the knife laws in your area. (I'm currently putting together a laminated card with relevent sections to put in my wallet)

More Gunting Specific thoughts:
IF you don't want to carry something as large as the Gunting, but your intrigued with the techniques, you might want to wait for the TUSOK to come out. I pretty sure it's been designed to use the same techniques. (Right?) But it'll be easier to carry. Just keep hanging out around here and you'll know when it happens. (IF it happens.......HINT!:p)
Bram is a great guy to train with. He's very good about making sure everyone has a good grasp of the basics.

That's a great idea of putting key points of knife laws on a laminated card. I have found that quite a few leo are not aware of some the changes in the law. This could really save you a trip to the station. I think I will have to make one up to carry also. I came across one department who's training officer was not aware of some major changes in the law. These changes were several years old!
