Haft length for ~3.5lb double-bit axe?

I've always been partial to 32-34" with 3.5# SB heads for chopping and felling. I've got a couple 4# on 36" and they're fine too, use them more for splitting. Depends on what mood I'm in.

House Handle sells a 30" handle with a full size eye.

Yep - pretty solid company and I got my last batch of about 10 handles from them. Only issue is that their straight handles jump from 28" up to 36" while their curved jump from 30" up to 36". Not too big a deal for me, but that's a fairly popular size range they're ignoring.

I've also ordered stuff from Tennessee hickory handle store and they're also pretty solid. They offer a larger selection than HHS but their stock is really thick and generally requires some slimming.

Just getting to the point brought up by Sp somewhat further back there about the right length. As I see it is indeed related to the task at hand but just as much to the proportions of the one doing the swinging and that's why I find number references a bit irrelevant without knowing just who were talking about. The illustration, being a simplification representing, in the way that I take it, an average body size, axe type and activity, provides a basis for each user to make whatever accommodations to his or her needs from that beginning point. But maybe Sp, you can elaborate about just what you mean there, it could be interesting.

I couldn't agree more. The task and the user will determine the weight and length of the axe. I stated some of my preferences in an earlier post in this thread.

Using the illustration in the link you provided the other day (not working for me today) I came up with 28" by one measurement and 31" by the other. Yet I find myself using axes anywhere from 14" to 36" in length and I can see where an even longer axe might be useful in some felling situations.

Some months ago Steve Tall started a thread about, 'if I could only have one axe.............if I could have only two axes..........if I could have three axes.......what would I choose?' That was an interesting thread.

Oh, here it is.

If only one axe....

Pegs, I've been wanting to try a Puget Sound on a 42" heft.
Hickory Handle Store sometimes has them and there octagon
