Also happy to report that the Hapstone RS - went on sale today)
Contact them to see what has happened.I had this in my cart waiting for payday and the price seems to have gone up overnight to $199. What a shame it was looking like a good value.
It seems like it was probably a decision made by Hapstone. I see on Hapstone's site they also upped the price by the same amount.I had this in my cart waiting for payday and the price seems to have gone up overnight to $199. What a shame it was looking like a good value.
Yes it looks like that is the case. It still looks like a very nice system. If you had to compare it to the Toohr #3 which would you say comes out on top?It seems like it was probably a decision made by Hapstone. I see on Hapstone's site they also upped the price by the same amount.
I don't have either one, so i want to make that very clear, but Quality always wins. I know which one i would be buying.Yes it looks like that is the case. It still looks like a very nice system. If you had to compare it to the Toohr #3 which would you say comes out on top?
For after sales support and quality, Hapstone is a winner but for phenomenal value for money (sometimes listed for under 70 bucks) the TooHR system is unbeatable.Yes it looks like that is the case. Congratulations! I will look forward to your updates. I am close to pulling the trigger on the RS as my first guided sharpener and welcome any and all information. This is an excellent thread and I have learnt an awful lot.I went with the Hapstone RS. I haven't sharpened with it yet but in the 5 or so minutes it took to assemble my first impression is that it's a very high quality, precision piece of equipment. I'm pleasantly surprised with the compactness of the whole system. This is a big benefit for me as I have limited workbench space. More details to come after I put the system to use. Thanks for all the great info in this thread!
It was approximately a 10% increase, up from $179.I just ordered one a few days ago. It's supposed to be here Monday the 1st. I seen some of the posts about the price going up. Just out of curiosity, what was the price before it went up to $199? To me, I still think it's a good deal because I can use the stones I already have. I have Venev 6 inch stones, so I don't have to buy any more. After using it for a while, I'll post again.
The RS looks very interesting. Do you know if the diamond stones for the Work Sharp Guided Sharpening System will work with it?
The Work Sharp stones are 6" x 1.25" and very thin. (Work Sharp describes the stones as being 1.5" wide but I've measured them at 1.25"). I already have both the stock stones and the upgrade kit stones and it would be nice to give the RS a try with the stones I already have.
Thanks,
Andrew
I see no reason why it won't work, but it will be lower than the top surface of the stone holders so you would just have to pay attention not to bump your knife edge into the front stone holder while sharpening.
Thanks. Forgive the basic questions but could the stones just lie flat on the blanks without gluing them? Wouldn't the blanks likely be 1" x 6" whereas my stones are 1.25" x 6", and would that matter? You could stick them on some cheap blanks.
Any idea of when/where will your Leading Edge Core module be available for the Hapstone RS? Just ordered the RS yesterday and am already looking at accessories.Minimum Angles:
I just finished designing and testing my Leading Edge Core platform for the Hapstone RS and took some photos of the minimum angle possible.
I designed the Leading Edge platform to sit slightly higher than the original clamp height (this allows a significantly lower sharpening angle if required). It also mounts higher than the Hapstone M3 & V8 platforms. (M3 and V8 platform photos at the end of this post.)
Here is a photo of my Leading Edge Core upgrade magnetic platform for the RS. I designed it to easily mount to the clamp bar using the original Hapstone clamp thumb screws.

Using my Leading Edge platform (with the 3-point knife guide removed), the lowest angle possible would be 2.1 degrees. The limit is the RS vertical angle adjustment rod set as far down as it can go. Photo below:

Leading Edge platform with the 3-point knife guide installed. Only 2 points of the guide is touching the spine of this blade (the center part of the guide is moved back and not in use). Small blades (like the Victorinox blade for example) can easily be sharpened down to 10 degrees in this configuration.

Now for some photos of the Hapstone V8 module mounted on the Hapstone RS platform:

The lowest possible angle using the Hapstone V8 module (M3 module will be the same) with a regular sized EDC blade, is 11.9 degrees. Again, the limit here is the RS vertical angle adjustment rod set as far down as it can go:

Gritomatic already has the design and some units, you'll have to check with them when they plan on releasing it.Any idea of when/where will your Leading Edge Core module be available for the Hapstone RS? Just ordered the RS yesterday and am already looking at accessories.
