Hard choices... fixed blade reccomendation

Lucas carroll was making scales for the CS AK47 field knife that pretty much transformed the knife in a good way if you didn't care for the stock scales, he is sold out of them at the moment but with luck he will be making more.
The fixed blade AK is a decent buy for a big chunk of 3V and easy to live with with aftermarket scales IMO.
I like the stock scales just fine but I'll look into it.

My friend however just won't buy CS because of the sheaths...

I also have aftermarket sheath for my AK47. And yeah, it's a big chunk of 3V, it's a true full tang and the HT is on point too. I like it. Fairly corrosrion resistant, easy to get sharp, stays sharp for pretty long and it never chipped or rolled on me.

There are several makers that sell custom kydex sheaths for Cold Steel knives and don't require you to send in your knife for fitting. Some are BF members and some are not.

As mentioned above, there are plenty of knifemakers here who can make him something spectacular for a good price. What's his maximum budget?

200€ is his max budget. And with current pricing here he could even get AK47 and also order a sheath for under 200€ total...

But by the looks of it he'll probs end up with LionSteel M5 in 3V, which comes with nice sheath and it's under his price. So that's not bad...

Sounds like a good choice.

EatingSama . . .Budget . . .I get it.

Granted.

Yet, if one can stand to delay gratification to wait for something worthwhile, many things are possible. WAiting can be tough when one is young, but then, if one is "mature" the possibility of running out of time is always a factor.

Currently, I am not indulging my desire for that CRK (which I don't really need) and a really nice camera (which I really do want), so that I can get my wife a really nice gift for her 75th birthday next year. . . .jewelry am I thinking.

How about an Apoc Knives Demko Bowie? It has a 6-3/4-inch D2 blade, Kydex sheath, bolt-on G10 handles, and lists for $99.00 USD on their site. Sure, they only offer a 1-year warranty, but the knife looks like the kind of stout your pal might not break.

For that matter, Demko's Freereign knives have a good reputation, 5-inch blades, run about $150.00 USD in AUS-10A steel, rubberized handles, have an innovative sheath, and can sometimes be found in Magnacut for around $200.00 USD.

I have the freereign and highly recommended the knife, but it is geared a bit more towards cutting than abusing I think.

Which I prefer.

I say, "Buy the knife you want. Get the sheath you need."

I bought a Randall Made "Special Fighter" (#16-1) back during the hot part of the "Global War on Terror". Gave it to a young Marine Lt. platoon leader about to deploy to Iraq. Paid extra for their black waxed leather sheath because it looked professional in my mind. Found out that none of that would meet what I understood to be requirements for durability and retention at the time from his recon unit. Haad to buy a "combat" sheath from Spec Ops or Blackhawk (don't recall now). Was kind of disappointed at the time to realize that Randall Made was not quite up to meeting the needs of our combatant warfighters in the 21st Century.

At the same time, I bought the same Marine a Chris Reeve "Green Beret". It came with a "jump qualified" combat ready sheath as-bought, ready to go out-of-the-box.

Cost for both knives was about the same at that time at around $250.

I think a Buck 104 Compadre will check all those boxes for him. Best heat treat and best warranty in the business. Made in the USA by a family-run company that’s older than airplanes and Harley Davidsons.

To be fair heat treating 5160 isn't exactly rocket science and Buck doesn't have some magic wand to give it extra special properties.
