The KD kitchen knives are really works of art. Just don't know if and when he'll ever get around to doing another run. I am satisfied with my HD/Ryusen for now.

I have one of the 270mm Sujihiki "forum knives" that Hattori did for the guys on the ITK subform over on Knifeforums before it imploded. Nice piece.

The FH series are very nice, I have held a few of them in my hand. I only chose the HD because I preferred the straight drop heel.

Were the original Hattori Honzo knives/swords of convex grind?

Hattori Hanzo was a real life samurai and a ninja in the 1500s in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate. And athough he is something of a player in Feudal Japanese History, he was never a bladesmith.

In his "Kill Bill" movies, Quentin Tarantino used the Hattori Hanzo name for a fictitious swordmaker living in Okinawa, a role played by the actor Shinichi "Sonny" Chiba, who had starred in several "Hattori Hanzo" ninja movies decades ago.

Please see Ichiro Hattori info here:

If your question is whether Japanese swords were traditionally convex ground, the answer would be yes. Although some were flat ground. Steel lamination was akso common and there were 6 or 8 different types of lamination.

Thanks, Ken. Besides the hattori site you suggested, any other sites for samurai swords of better quality or Japanese knives with convex grinds?

As far as I am aware most Japanese knifemakers produce a mix of grinds. You might want to look through Japaneseknifedirect.com at the various
makers. I know my Kiku Matsuda is convex but not sure if all of his knives are. Of course the easiest way to get a Hattori convex grind is to buy a Fallkniven.
As for swords I think you will get better answers in the swords subforum here.
