Everything that's been suggested is good, but my two cents say to go with a Spyderco Endura. It isn't the prettiest knife out there, but it makes no compromises on performance and costs less than half of what you pay for almost anything else in its class. It is an outstanding "starter knife" for anyone who wants a tough and versatile folder.
