How To Help: remove severe loctite screw from free spinning stand off

I have a screw (t6) stuck in a free spinning round/cylinder stand off, currently stuck in a scale. i can get the other side off, it's just one side with the screw loctited shut into the stand off and spinnning around together in the scale hole. i tried the blow dryer trick, but i'm not able to grip or hold the round/cylinder shape stand off strongly enough to get the screw out and it just spins...

Put the other screw back in etc. so it's not so free spinning.

Use the tip of a soldering iron to heat the head of the screw.

thanks for the reply! i don't have a soldering iron... could that much heat potentially cause the screw to soften and become prone to stripping? also, if i put the other screw back in, and try to get the stuck screw out, the other screw just comes undone...

The heat from a soldering iron won't affect the screw. If you have G-10 or natural material scales you have to be careful not to cook those.

Once you break the stubborn screw loose the other screw will come out fine.

If this is red locktite then you need to use a heat source that will provide 550 F of heat. A hair dryer won't even hit 150.

I had this issue before. I used a pair of pliers to grip the stand off. I put a peice of rubber from those rubber braclets inbetween the pliers and stand off. Then i was able to remove it.

I've had good luck with vise grips, pliers always slipped too much. Vise grips and a wiha bit.

i did briefly try with plyers, but i didn't go that hards as i was afraid of damaging or denting the standoff and be completely screwed. i will try again with the rubber, that sounds like a better idea

And eat your wheaties.

i need to switch from the weak sauce cheerios, but it lowers my cholesterol... lol

it's a titanium handle, but has blue ano. it definitely wont mess with the integrity of the titanium, but it could screw up the ano right?

on a side note, there's no way in hell a blow dryer will screw up a blue ano right?

Using the soldering iron give you a really targeted heat on the screw and stand off. While a hair dryer shouldn't affect the finish it's impossible to say for sure without knowing what was done before. Some Ti anno is a chemical bath and some is the bath plus flame.

Heat gun that goes to over 600 degrees. Keep it moving and don't touch any metal pieces with your bare hand. Use leather gloves or something. If it has g10 or micarta keep the heat moving don't keep it in one spot. Once the hold is loosened from heat it will be easier to break. Soldering iron may work also, but not a cheap ass one.

thanks for the reply.. this all seems a little out my pay grade and i don't have the equipment or know anyone who does. do you know what types of businesses would be able to help me with a project like this? maybe someone on BF you guys could recommend?

Hopefully someone will see this and offer to help. I don't know many folks on bf that do this work. But their are quite a few that should be able to.

Boil water in a pan. Turn off heat, drop in knife, wait 5 min.
Take out, place knife on towels. Torx should loosen, if not return it to hot water. Try again.
WORKS EVERY TIME

nice, this is something i can try! any idea if this will screw up a blue ano on titanium?

looks like ano has to be 600+ F to apply.. water boils at 212 F, but i'm sure the pan itself gets much hotter than 212. maybe pour the water into a bowl? there's not way 200 degree water can screw up ano right??
