Historic axes, 18th century

My new axe adventure is to find out what it is like to chop wood with a Bronze Age axe. I have work experience with Stone Age axes and of course lots of work experience with Iron Age axes. But, now I have the chance to add Bronze Age. I bought a reproduction Bronze axe head from a guy in Ukraine I deal with. If you want to look at it you can find it on ETSY, listed as "Ancient Bronze Age Axe Replica From Ukraine" his seller name is LEATHERARTWOOD. I have a beautiful piece of curly Koa to make the haft !

Tom, thanks for that offer. I will get to the project, but have some other things to finish up first. I will email when I finish the hang and sharpening. Were you able to see the head on Etsy ?

The 1850 cut off date is arbitrary. My particular interest has always been using axes from the USA colonial period to the post civil war industrial revolution period. This I believe to be the most important time frame of development for what we refer to as the American axe. I have been lucky in my work with the National Park Service and the U S Forest Service to be allowed to inspect all the Axes, Adzes, Hatchets in the collections of the Smithsonian Institute, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Mercer museums. The best part for me was being allowed to see the archived axes, not just the axes on exhibit.

Bronze is substantial metal. Should work fine. Email me photos and I’ll post them.

crbn-Thanks for showing that. I am more excited than ever ! You would think a long time retired guy like me would have plenty of time for a exciting axe project like this one. Sad to tell you, it does not always work that way.
I have the bronze head in hand and it is just as good looking as the picture !
